I'm not sure this really classifies as a WIP, as its not far from completion, but i just cant get the depth of the background right, it just feels off. Its meant to be a sort of cliff face, but should i go another direction with it? Any constructive help would be appreciated.

Looking good.
Unusual composition -- will there be something in the foreground at completion?
You're right, the background doesn't quite work. Maybe the vehicles need to be a bit darker or something. And maybe a slightly different hue to the background. And the background itself probably needs some definition, but I don't know what it should define. _________________ Art Links Archive -- Artists and Tutorials |

hi! I like it! for adding more depth or contrast between the vehicles and cliff face try adding a color glaze-maybe blue and I agree about something in the foreground. maybe a cool like pot of fire or something? or a puddle reflecting the sky and bringing that white color foreward |

Personally I like the look alot. I wouldn't say that it looks like a cliff face in the background, but to tell you the truth whne I first saw it with all that texture it felt like it was raining in the picture. I think if you play with the values a bit more the background could be some mist caused by rain.
What I'm having problems with visually is seperating the APC/Tanks from the background, however it could be that what the paint scheme is meant to do, considering usually those things are somewhat painted to be camoflauged. I think the problem I"m having is with values. You're darker up from, with a wider range of values. Kudos on you for that, and the back is more monochromatic with less values, but the tank things aren't exactly in the very back of the piece. _________________ "It's not the tools you use but how you use them that counts." |

Thanks for the suggestion guys, I decided to rework it for the most part as i felt most of the elements did nothing for the picture. How do you people feel about this one?

Both very cool. Call me a heritic but I liked the first one as it was, with the exception of the pose of that guy to the right. The lack of focus makes it feel less "staged" and more real, I thought. And I like that. I also like the palette and how my eye instantly searches out the people clad in color, even though their clothing is very bleak. That the background isn't detailed or realistic is almost a blessing, making you focus on the crowd. Perhaps a dust storm instead of a mountain wall?
The second is also great, albeit more generic (in my very humble opinion).
Is there a specific purpose to these, or a story behind them? |
