I was at the Gnomon Live workshop thing this weekend. Feng mentioned there was a way to Mid-Max the performance of your pc and get rid of all the unnecessary programs running to make the computer run smoother. How do i go about shutting these programs off instead of going into the task manager everytime the computer loads? _________________ www.kevinchinart.com

depends on which version of windows you're using. Try going to start>run and then typing "msconfig" without the quotes. _________________ brian.prince|light.comp.paint |

if your running an OS based on the NT Kernal then u can goto <control panel - administrative tools - services> and then look through the list to see what you're not using and turn off (you can find a list on M$ website)
but to be honest with you i don't think you'll find much that you can stop that doesn't use alot of resources, there are some stuff that hardcore gamers turn off because they sware it gives them that extra 2 frames in games, but for design based software its going to be about how fast your hard disks are and how they're setup, how u allocate your pagefile, the speed of your CPU, how much RAM you have and how fast it is..
its also about optimising the application to run on your system..
eg.
i have 2.5GB of RAM in my workstation and set 80% of available RAM to Photoshop and used to wait around for quite small PSD files to open (4MB) and then watch 6MB JPEG and 50MB TIFF files open in 0.2-0.4 seconds, i did some digging as it was really getting on my nerves waiting for a small PSD (quite a few layers) to open (thought it was my HDD setup) and found that if you have over 1GB of RAM then you shouldn't allocate more than 55% to Photoshop, i tried it and now i'm stuck @ 55% as it makes PS blisteringly fast in opening files now all my files open in 0.2-0.5 seconds and i'm happy
of course for batch filters to photographs i'm never happy with the speed that they're done in.. |
