I don't know if any of you have been following the MacWorld Expo going on, but Steve Jobs has introduced the new G4. It alone could pass for a piece of art. Just thought you all would like a peek.
They have the specs (and the price) on Apple's site
I'm still drooling...

Looks like a damned robot. From the 30's. From a really cheap-ass flick.
"And, oh. By the way, Mr. Jobs, you have really impressive looking vents."
But hey. At least it's not translucent.

You guys are morons!!!
PuckDewd has put this up because this is something that not only is beautiful but is one fantastic computer. I have heard that these G4's can do the most complex photoshop filters almost instantanious.
I never thought that Apple could break the rules of computer design again with so unique a design but man that is amazing!
I want one.
They should give their industrial design team a big fat raise.
Thanks for posting that PuckDewd |

If you guys don't like something new that is artistic then get out of this forum.

Um.. yeah! Get out!
But the thing looks like it's modeled and rendered in a 3D program. Heh. |

while the shiny box looks pretty spiffy, i think the guys at Mac are getting a little to obsessed with rendering speeds on their computers. i think they should start improving other severly poor areas of their computers also. |

It may look nice and new but its going to die quickly, Apple really loves to go for the cute computer without adding functionality(i.e. the iMac).
It may be strong and all but its impossible to upgrade anything but ram. Forget about playing games on this, my Voodoo card is almost twice the size.
Although this could be an EXCELLENT college computer, it has the power and its very small. Not a very good choice for a home computer though. |

Yeah yeah, it is nice to look at, but I am tired of Apple (steve) putting all their money and marketing in beauty.
They need to stick with the basics and put all their power into a simple cheap box so that they could climb back into the market!
They also need to stop being stubburn about software and make everything easier to program for it. Number one reason people don't buy apple is because of software compatibility! People don't walk into Best Buy and see 10 rows of Mac software, they see 10 rows of PC/Windows software. HELL there is almost more software for LINUX then their is for MAC!
And then apple wants you to pay almost twice as much for that piece of cube when people can get twice the strength and software power for half the price.
Steve J. has a lot of work to do, the only reason he is still around is because Bill needed a company around so he wouldn't have total control (monopoly) so he bought millions of shares. Although it didn't work (he did that around 2-3 years ago), but Steve isn't doing anything different then 10 years ago and that doesn't cut it in the changing world of marketing and more important software.
Sorry I kept on going, but I loved mac's but they pissed me off when they became so stubburn and thought they were god's! Now they still think they are god's, when really they are peasants. |

Hello,
I've been browsing this area for some time and thought this would be a good chance to jump into the mix.
My take on the G4 cube is that Jobs is addressing those who wanted an alternative to the iMac. Consider it a rich man's iMac with the option to use a larger monitor.
If you want expandibility get a G4 tower... it's cheaper and more powerfull (dual processors for the price of one!).
Yes the cube is pricey, but so are their Powerbooks... the money goes into the design of a computer in such a small space. If you want simplicity, get an iMac. If you want simplicity, style and don't mind the price get a Cube. If you want power and expandability get a tower. It's as simple as that -- Apple is keeping it's product line short and sweet. Does everybody remember the Apple prior to Jobs' return? It was hell trying to find the right Mac for you -- the naming scheme was atrocious (The Performa 6360/6400/6500, 9100, 9600, 8600, etc, etc). It was frustrating to say the least.
If you're not impressed with the Cube then chances are it wasn't aimed for your needs (or you're a WinPC person). I personally like everything about it: the design, architecture and ingentuity (almost everything; despite the vents at the top -- perfect for a disaster to happen if someone was standing with a drink. But then I have the discipline not to place drinks near my computer for such reasons anyway).
It's been slowly pushing Apple's market share steadily for the last two years... something right must be happening.
Anyway, that's just my take on it.
Cheers
P.S. Anyone remeber the fuss everyone made about the first time the floppy drive was removed? I don't miss it at all.

I don't give a damn if you use a mac or PC, or perhaps you prefer the C64 - all the same to me. Still, the first thing I thought of when I saw that photo was "so where do I insert the slices of bread"
