Hey, This image has a lot of promise:)

What springs to mind is the background colours... I think the portrait would have more impact if you toned them down,maybe also make it darker.

Another thing, playing with shapes is always a nice way to make an interesting image. Maybe define the lips a bit more with a sharper line? the shadow under the nose looks a bit strange compared to where the light is coming from. Other than that I think its coming along nicely.
