His face is too white and the values of light and dark are very extreme. At first I thought it was an all-red guy with a white ninja-mask on or something. Try looking at reference photos of faces to find skintones |

Please step away from photoshop
signd,
The Interweb.
At this point all I can say in a constructive manor is that you need to not use the computer for a long time. sit down with a pad and pencil and draw from life and dont stop. then when you have better skills, you will be able to use Photoshop properly. If you stay using PS at this point you wont ever improve.
Photoshop is a tool for artists, it isnt to be relied on. Using it is only effective when you have the proper skills. So go start doing some drawings, and dont stop practicing _________________ Visit glitterbugs Secret Forum |

Ah, I don't know if I agree with that. Yeah, actually I know I don't. You see, I am not a very good artist at this point, but my skills have improved immensely by using photoshop and my wacom. I think there is something to what Exoudeous is saying though. Maybe move away from comics and things and draw from life. Drawing from life is awesome. It really improves one's ability to draw from imagination because once you've drawn from life enough you have a whole library stored in your mind of how things look with a certain lighting, or how textures look or shapes or just whatever.
So I am just offering a contrary opinion which I can back up with personal experience. Keep using photoshop and you will improve. |

Better yet, continue doing both. Best way to improve in anything is to continue. Both PS and pencil and paper can increase you skill and knowledge. IMO, the pictures are great. You appear to have a decent understanding of shading and anotomy, just keep drawing and making. ^^ |

I think it's just a matter of light. The light seems to incide on every single surface from the front, regardless of the direction it faces. Also, it seems like you're using the selection tool to fill areas with color on the same layer (leaving little white pixels in between). If you use different layers you can simply paint overlapping blocks of color, lock the layers and do whatever you want to without interfering with the other colors.
If you're going to work in this manner it might be a better idea to use a vector based program like corel draw or adobe illustrator though.
Either way you choose to do it (vectors or painting) drawing is essential.
edit:
oh yeah in the second picture, apart from what i mentioned earlier, the values (lightness/darkness) of all the colors are too high and not enough contrast is created. _________________ It's nice to be important, but more important to be nice - Scooter |

My whole point is that its kinda hard to do much of anyting in photoshop if you dont have more basic drawing skills. the anatomy and structure of his character is way off, not to mention the rendering of it all. You dont learn how to do that in ps, though you can get better at it
Which is why im saying ps isnt a good idea for now, once he has built upon the fundamentals then he can move on to doing things in ps. _________________ Visit glitterbugs Secret Forum |
