made for a wallpaper contest (lol)

yes yes I know, clearly inspired by Craig Mullins, but doing this piece while using his as a sort of reference has really taught me quite a bit of stuff.

And yes, C&C is really 10 years old already, I'm sure there are you guys who have played the game(s) before and have fond memories of it, maybe you can drop by here and pen them down.

And maybe, if you have any painting any art related to the games, you can post them in this thread.

You could try to improve the way you define edges - the turbine for example looks very soft, even though it probably shouldn't be. Also if you're going for a pic with heavy athmospheric effects - smoke, haze etc. - you could use them to make the image more dynamic by, for example, having the orca emerge from a cloud of smoke. I think the best part here is the front of the orca, even if the reflection on the glass probably isn't exactly accurate.

Oh, the tilted look at the ground is a good idea, but the smoke covers so much of it, a lot of the effect is lost. Also at the top right quadrant the edge of the dark area seen from behind the pillar of smoke sort of reads like a horizon line, which lessens the effectiveness of the perspective.

i dont see how picking off colors, subject matter and composition from somebody elses work classifies as your own.

Thanks for the comments.

Yeah, I'm still experimenting a little, I can't seem to get a good hard-edged brush which could still blend nicely, so sometimes while going over an area too much, it only serves to blur it up. I probably should've looked for reference on the turbine, but I was sort of trying to convey that it's spinning/running.

Anyways I have to first explain that all this was about one day's work since I only kinda found out about it yesterday (the contest deadline being today). There was little or no planning involved, so yea... some things, especially the background as you pointed out, was created haphazardly and really could be done better. Most of the smoke was really just to fill up space (albeit a little overdone, there were actually still a few structures on the left which gave more clues to the perspective), I neglected much of the background - save for the Refinery structure to inject some extra C&C element into the environment - to draw most attention to the Orca.

And oh the reflection on the glass (you shouldn't see the wing at all eh), I did notice that a little while after I posted that, but... let's just say I was lazy, and I had already submitted the image to the contest. I may edit it at a later date.

Did I not already explain my source of inspiration? I foresaw this kind of comments, so I'm just gonna ignore it. I painted this as fan art for the series, I don't see why just because the work bears semblance to another piece of work, which I had even acknowledged, would make it "not mine". And just a FYI, this is the first time I've ever referenced anyone's work, let alone spooge's, and like I said, it helped me a great deal in finding out the effects of using conflicting or different blend modes in brushes and layers.

I see. So i suppose when i click on your link to Derelict Studios it mentions nothing of ripping the image off Craig Mullins Site or even being "inspired". By the way, if you are using his work as a reference thats fine. Everyone does it. But to display your work publicly like you have and calling it your own? That i do dislike. What is there to criticize about your image anyway, look at the original and you'll see whats wrong with it because apart from the back part of the helicopter and the turbines. Its exactly the same.

And you're entitled to your opinion.

Those in the know will know where I got the inspiration from, those who don't couldn't care less. If someone asks, I'll say that I did, but I do not have a reason to post Mr Mullins' name everywhere as if I am related to him or something or whatever, it's very unsettling, I have nothing to claim from doing that, and is he going to make a big hoo-haa if I didn't? Not to mention, this piece was meant as a tribute to a game, I'm not making money or whatever out of it, so what is your problem really? And would you even accuse me of "ripping off" if my inspiration wasn't his work?

I don't know why you're getting so worked up, are you Spooge? It still is my work, one that I painted completely, how did I "rip" him off other than perhaps... the composition? Seriously, go take another look at the original(s) because I don't think you have, the style and technique, as well as colour use is completely different, if you think my work is anywhere near his in terms of skill, why thank you, but I don't think it is.

Anyways, why don't you post some of your ORIGINAL ARTWORKS to be criticized?

EDIT: just in case you're too lazy, the album link is here:
