How about a thread with the goal of finishing a highly polished piece over the course of the month or two? Have a few milestones that participants must meet:

- thumbnail sketches
- tonal/color sketches
- WIP
- final piece

I bet people would participate in that. Even if only 5 or 6 people finished their pieces, that's 6 new pieces of art that have been brought into the world, and that's something.

This is what Ballistic wrote in digitalart discussion. http://forums.sijun.com/viewtopic.php?t=39568&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0
And since I have promised to do one non profit commercial poster to some liveroleplaying festival (http://www.dragonbane.org/en/), why not make this idea happen too. (I wasn't sure that should I put this thread here or workinprogress area, so I flipped a coin Very Happy )

To make the rules clear..
If you want to participate:
The idea is that you make a large finished painting (3000 x something perhaps?) of your own, showing us your work in progress. If you have a story behind your painting, we would very much like to hear it, but you should at least meet these criteria.

- thumbnail sketches
- tonal/color sketches
- WIP
- final piece

They asked me to do a painting for them, but as usually, gave no idea of what to do. So here's my thumbnail sketches. I just send these to the client, so let's see what they want.

Brutal shot. Here should become some soldiers fighting and blood is flooding.

Here should become some soldiers fighting

Some soldier posing. Simple, but works. The needed commercial texts will blend nicely and will be easily read. Personal favourite. This could be neat.

And finally the clish. Eww

Go cliche dragon! hehe

I probably won't ever get around to participating, but it would be interesting to see everyone else going through the creative process. I could learn something Very Happy

I used for those a photo of a plywood, and a chipboard.

5 says yes and 6 says perhaps. Looking good. So I'd say that atleast 2 will actually participate, and that's way over my expectations. Very Happy

..still waiting for the answer from my "client"

Nice thumbs, Petri. You ask if we're going to participate.... but what do you mean? Participate how? Are people supposed work from your thumbnails... or... what? I'm confused.

I'm sorry if I said it somehow confusingly, or didn't make it clear enough. I blame my bad English.
No, you should not work from my thumbnails.

I had imagined this idea would be more of a group activity like draw club except for finished work rather than sketches.

As in, The thread states the time frame and the topic, and however much time later when the deadline comes, the thread fills up with people's creations which people gab about / can add to portfolio / can criticise / can provide an opportunity to learn something of the illustration process that comes after sketching / etc. you get the idea.

OK, I'd like to participate, and I've made a rough of my idea. Should I post it here or do the whole thing and then post the various stages of the creation of the image?

Spiral: I think it's better to post them now and that way people might get inspired by them. I'm sorry it took me couple days to reply to this, I had to repair my computer.

Capt. Fred: I find it is hard to criticise work that it already finished - or actually not hard, but not very useful. That person who made the painting is not going to change the "errors" any more when it's finished. And as I said before, it might inspire people to draw when they see paintings coming together.
Edit: I saw your PM today, I don't know why it didn't show earlier..

I'm still waiting for the answer from my entry.

Yeah, same here, and I think the biggest problem will be the fact that I will get tired to the painting, after looking at it several hours. And when I get tired to it, I start chaging it, and then it goes from bad to worse. Rolling Eyes

Seth1: Lookin' good, keep going Smile

I should do a poster for school, and it should be near finished, for next wensday. The subject is "from ice and snow". I should do a comic too, with the same subject and deadline, so things keep busy Very Happy (Though I already have the idea for it, so all I have to do is draw it..)
So anyway, here is the sketch for the poster.

Now to sleep. ZZzzz.
Edit: Almost forgot. It's supposed to be an ice sculpture.

Trying to figure out the reflection, specularity and transperency. Kind of hard to do finished painting. Those speed paintings are much more forgiving.

Ver nice!! But I liked the one with the apple much more - adds an interesting atmosphere to the whole image.
I have some suggestions but before I start to talk forever I just made this paintover to illustrate you what I mean. I hope that's okay!
I changed the composition and the lightning, that's all actually Very Happy
Hope it helps. Keep up the good work!

I don't know if I'm "participating" persay, but, if anyone's interested...I'm about to finish a piece based on one of these compositions. The theme is "warrior chick" just random.

Thanks Max, I really should put some contrast in it, that those beams was a good idea. I'll add them later. People like that apple verion better, but since I don't like it, and since I'm so stubbern, I refuse to do it Very Happy (Propably when I look at this painting after couple months, I realize that those people was right, but that's too late.)
Xillion on cgtalk suggested, that if there would be some one inside. So i made a test if it would work.

I'm kind of having problems with detailing snow, and how thick/thin should the ice be.
I honously tried to detail that snow, but the overpaint layer allways went straight to trashcan. 6 times.
Perhaps tomorrow I'll do better.

That painting just went crazy, I have nothing to do with it. Honoustly Very Happy
Well, atleast the snow worked out little better than earlier this week.
