Hey guys, I have a question here and I hope someone can shed some light on this because right now this is the biggest issue I have with Painter and digital painting in general.
For me, Painter is all about texture. Many of the brushes look just fantastic, and 90% of my work relies on the Oils brush variants - Variable Flat, Flat Oils and Smeary Flat specifically. They look great - at 1:1 screen resolution. As soon as you zoom out the nice textures are lost, and it doesn't matter what you do with the piece - the personality and individual qualities of the brush variants only seem to work at screen resolution.
I've grown used to painting at 1:1 resolution for my pieces, and when 70% of the piece is done I resize it with the Lanczos filter in IrfanView. Works okay, but I get an awful lot of pixel artefacts and the final stages of a painting are reduced to cleaning up the mess...
So.. Is it possible to resize the individual "hairs" on the Oils brush variants? Is there a simple control mechanism for all brushes to scale the texture effects so that when I'm working on a 4000x3000 canvas I get the same texture qualities I get on a smaller canvas?
If you have any input at all on this please share it with me.

Hi Mathias:
By default, Painter IX does not average zoomed-out views. Go the Corel Painter IX: Preferences: General dialog (CTRL/CMD + K) and click on the checkbox for "Draw zoomed-out views using area averaging". If your current image is already zoomed out, you won't see any change. Zoom to 1:1 and then rezoom out to see the area averaging working. Note that there will likely always be some minor moire effect at reduced scales depending on the type of brush used, but area averaging will visually remove the most distracting artifacts at zoomed-out views.
The reason that this is not enabled by default is mainly a speed consideration for older machines. Area averaging on takes a bit longer to refresh the screen but, considering today's processors, most users will benefit by having area averaging on.
With regard to the Oil brushes' hairs: no, they are not rescalable. You can adjust their density via the "Feature Size" slider (Brush Property Bar). Smaller values increase density; higher values decrease density. If you find that you are having speed issues with a variant that uses Feature Size, try adjusting this parameter upwards a bit.
I hope this helps!
I checked out your web site...Awesome Work! Is it mainly done with Painter?
Viva la Painter!

Hi John,
Thanks for writing, sorry to hear that there seems to be nothing to do about the resolution-vs-texture issue with this version of Painter. What I'm looking for ideally is a simple contol that overrides all the settings for every single brush category - a button that says "x4" and ta-ta! every aspect of the brushes is increased by a factor of four.
Glad you like my work Yes it's mostly Painter, with a touch of Photoshop here and there. Nothing beats Painter tho, that's where the magic happens.
