For those of you that don't know what Machinama is, it's a toolset used for making films using game engines and such. Here's a brilliant use of the technology with Half Life 2:

Boring? Maybe so but I was impressed with the physical character inflections (gestures, raised eyebrow, etc.); it's the first time I've ever seen something that actually seem to have projected impression. _________________ - Tom Carter

I have to agree with you Gort, the "acting" was really nice.
It's great to see they don't focus on action,... |

I hope people starts using this to make some really cool machinima stuff that can tell a much wider range of stories than the Halo/Red VS. Blue stuff. |

It's not exactly machinima, (since its static) but some people have made great comic strips with Garry's Mod for HL2. The game has a lot of potential, with its facial animations and stuff, and I think that video showed off a good part of that, it's pretty cool, I mean it's USER created content, those animations and the lipsynching were perfect (really reminds me of the movie too ), though I think what's lacking is the full body animation, as well as forcefullness in some areas of speech, some parts of the dialogue looked way too stiff. _________________ Derelict Studios|Godwin's Space |

Indeed, Godwin, but despite the limitations, this Few Good Men short is a step up, imo, from the typically restrained looking stuff using other engines. Furthermore from a standpoint of animatics, it blows away anything I've seen by an industry standard (such as FrameForge). Speilberg used the Unreal engine to previsualize and setup shots for A.I. _________________ - Tom Carter

Again, technically speaking it's good.. but as a real machinima movie, it's poop It's not original, it has nothing entertaining in it..
I would take Apartment Hunting any day over this. lol!
Apt. Hunting used Quake1 engine, and was so entertaining.. it was gold! |

Damn, you crazy Russian! I see yer point, but I'm not debating on originality but rather technique. There's a quite a few very entertaining keygrip / machinama movies out there, but my point here is that the HL2 engine seems to offer a new level of visual story telling. Now with your point in mind, someone needs to make better use of the engine with some originality. _________________ - Tom Carter

Agreed.
And there is so much material just from HL1 mods alone.. great stories and character possibilities. They could shovel that s**t for years! I hope to see some great stuff in near future. |

This is pretty impressive. But just ot be an annoying nitpicker - i somehow remember from the movie bodylanguage being a lot more expressive from the neck down. Here they just move around like sticks... a little odd.
Apartment hunting rocked. _________________ "A fear of weapons is a sign of retarded sexual and emotional maturity" - Sigmund Freud |
