I accidentally inserted a DVD into my DVD drive, forgetting that there's already a DVD in there. It made pretty loud noises once it started spinning, and I immediately ejected the tray. Too late, now my DVD drive doesn't work anymore. I can still open and close the tray, but it does nothing when I put a DVD in. Is there anything I can do to salvage it? |

I'm surprised it even managed to close with two discs in the tray.
I would guess that the added weight and torque effect of the second disc probably boned the drive motor. The laser's likely okay, but these things are built so cheap that they don't have much tolerance for running out of spec.
You can get a brand new DVD burner for $40. That's probably your best option, unless you're looking for a mechanical challenge. It could take you an hour an half just to get the thing apart, much less put back together again to test it. _________________ brian.prince|light.comp.paint |

Buy a new one, everything else is probably just wasted time and makes no sense with current prices. |

Better yet, you just got a brand new automatic coaster for your computer.
Or you could hide things in there, like with a secret drawer. No one is ever going to check the DVD drive for money. _________________ QED, sort of. |

Yeah, it happened to me too. Although it was a CD drive, but it worked fine after that. I think your DVD drive is just busted.. If you don't need it right away, then take it out, take it apart, play with it.. Then see if you can fix it yourself. (my brother did it one time and was successful) If not, then buy a new one.
BTW guys, he can't use those shopping websites i think. He's in CHINA! |

Actually I buy a lot of stuff online from the States and I always get them fine--except they tend to get intercepted by customs and I'd have to go and clear the stuff and pay some import tax. It's kinda annoying, but unless you are buying politically sensitive or health sensitive stuff, you're fine.
I'll try taking the sucker apart and see what happens. It's a DVD ROM/CD burner in one, so it might be slightly more complicated than just straight DVD ROM? |

Yeah, but I kinda like tinkering with tools every once a while, so I'll give it a shot just for fun. For those of you that have done it, can you give me some tips on what exactly am I looking for inside the guts of the drive? |

Maybe a rubber belt fell off or something got stuck.. Just look at the mechanism. You can even hook it up to power while it's open, and try to use it (but be careful). Perhaps you might notice what's wrong with it.
If it's burned circuit or motor, you can't really do anything with it. |
