I recently picked up a new videocard (Radeon 9800 Pro) and started working at 1280x960 instead of 1600x1200 to take advantage of the higher refresh rate (and to keep my monitor from making a horrible squeeling noise). When using Painter or Deep Paint, the wacom cursor no longer lines up with where paint is applied. When I make a mark, it appears 10cm below and to the right of where the cursor is drawn on screen. At 1600x1200, it seems to work fine, but at 1280x960 I get the offset effect.

Any idea what's going on? I tried a reboot and it didn't help. Photopaint, Artrage, Photoshop, and Expression 3 all work fine. The problem seems confined to Painter and Deep Paint.

edit: I should mention, it's Painter 6.5 (ancient, I know). I haven't tried reinstalling it yet.

Hi ballistic,

First, there is no Painter 6.5. The patches were:

6.0.1
6.0.3
6.1

If you've installed the Painter 6.1 patch, you have the latest version and you would not need to have installed the previous patches as 6.1 includes everything to make it up to date.

I forget the exact combinations of platform, OS version, Painter version, and Wacom tablet model but you may not be able to fix this problem with Painter 6 and possibly not with Deep Paint either. I don't have Deep Paint but do have Painter 6.1 running on my WinXP Home SP2, 512 MB RAM system set to run in compatibility mode with Windows 98/Windows ME and it works just fine.

Things you might try, though, are:

Did you change your screen resolution while Painter and/or Deep Paint were running? If so, that can cause problems. Not sure if this will fix it, but with Painter 6 and Deep Paint closed, try resetting your screen to a different resolution, then back to the screen resolution you want. Reboot, then launch Painter 6 and Deep Paint.

Are you sure your have yoru Wacom Tablet Properties control panel settings set up right? If not, check them to make sure. One thing in particular... you need to have it set to Pen Mode.

Have you installed the latest Wacom tablet driver? If not, try downloading and installing it.

If you're usng two monitors, do you have your second monitor on the right? If not, try moving it to the right to see if it helps.

If all else fails, try deleting your wacom.dat file or tablet.dat file (dependng on the driver version), then reboot and a new wacom.dat or tablet.file will be generated which will reset the tablet preferences to default. Then you'll need to go to the Wacom Tablet Properties control panel and set everything up again the way you want it.

Hope something above helps.

Good luck!

Ah yes, I meant Painter 6.1, sorry. And I've rebooted a few times, with no effect. The tablet is definitely configured properly because it works correctly in other programs. Actually, it works okay in every part of the Painter interface EXCEPT the canvas itself. I can click on menus and the color chooser, and the cursor is right where it should be, but if I go over the canvas, then it's not in the right spot. I'll try an uninstall and reinstall of the .dat and drivers I guess.

balistic: This is a very annoying problem related to Painter (and seemingly DeepPaint too) when changing resolution.

After much searching on newsgroups etc., I found out that you need to find "TABLET.DAT" in the windows\system32 directory (sometimes called "WACOM.DAT" on older drivers) and delete it. Then reboot. The driver will re-initialise the file correctly with the new resolution and the cursor should now match up with the paint cursor location.

[ edit - as Jin already said... Embarassed ]

Awesome, I will try that as soon as I get home.

Thanks for the help, both of you.

Just for closure, uninstalling the driver and updating to the latest one solved my problem.

ballistic,

Good news! Thanks for letting us know.

Looks like you killed two or three birds with one stone:

got rid of the wacom.dat/tablet.dat file

got a new driver

got your problem fixed!

Love it when things work!
