I have just recently started painting some of my art work in photoshop and there is one thing that seems to hinder me in this endevour. That is I feel my progress is halted till I find a solution on this problem and thus I would like to use this forum to send out the word to you guys who have more experience in this then me. The thing is I have been having problems making realistic shading in photoshop. I use photoshop cs by the way, with a trust drawing tablet.

My question is how to I blend one tone of shadow with another so it really blends on the paper, or screen that is? I have no problems producing stuff with simple animation like shading but what I am seeking is a way to create more realistic shading, the type one would see in paintings that is!

I have experamented quite alot with this, tried all kinds of techniges to little results. I have tried lowering the opacity and the flow of the brush, and I have tried all kinds of blurs.

Oh and I was also wondering what is the difference between a trust tablet and a wacom? I know that wacom is better but I have often wondered why. How so is the difference between them that makes a wacom better?

Please reply with all the technigues you know it will be very much appreciated!

jg.

ps: Please forgive my spelling, english isn't my mother language.

Thanks. Smile

Reduced opacity and a spatter brush shape or blurred crosshatching set to linear burn.

Wacom tablets (except for Graphire) offer 1024 levels of pressure sensitivity, and are more reliable and durable (hence the BIG price difference).

Could you please elaborate on what you mean by spatter brush shape?

I also vote for pressure sensitive opacity. Here's my approach:

Yeah I had the same trouble at first, but then I learned to just select an intermediary color and paint the transition. I try to color pick as little as I can. That gives me a greater variety of colors on the final piece.

I would like to thank all who replied to my post, now the only thing I can complain about hindering my growth as an artist is my lack of experience, I must say that all the technigues you gave me really did work. There is one question though, I would like to share how I am using the knowledge I just gained from you guys by posting some of the work I have going right now. I have noticed quite frequently that people put pictures in their posts, like Mr jfrancis did. My question is how do I do that? I think it would be a very useful knowledge to back up your case when you post here! Smile Oh and everyone who wants to post more replies to my previous question is welcome to! Smile Thanks again guys!

First, you need to upload the image(s) to a web site, so others can see them. It is possible to run a web server directly on your own computer, but that requires you to stay online 24/7 and have a pretty good connection so others can download the images fast. There's a link to a free image hosting site in my signature, where you can upload your image files (jpeg, gif and png mainly). *shameless advertisement* Very Happy

The next step is to put the full address to the image (e.g. http://www.picaroni.com/lockeorange.jpg) in a post, and surround it with [img] [/img] tags. There's a little Img button when you make your post that does the tag creation for you.

The Sijun FAQ has similar answers, plus more good reads for using the forum properly: http://forums.sijun.com/faq.php#24

Ok I just figured out how to upload a picture to the forum, didn't take me long due to the great help I got from Chruser, Mr chruser I presume. Ok I would like to get some tips on this picture here that I am working on, merely a practice though with the methods I have learned from this post and I would like to get some comments if people are so inclined. I did this with pressure sensitivity and a linear burn brush. I had the outlines on a different layer set to multiply and then put down the colors on a layer behind that. So I was wondering am I on the right path here? Something I should do differently perhaps? I am eager to learn so do post please, i'm like a darned spungebob right now I just suck it all up. Wink

a good size is 700 to 1000 pixels in width and/or 500 to 800 in height.

You can resize your picture, and upload it to the same place you have it, overwriting the old picture. Once overwritten, it will show up smaller here.

I don't seem to be able to find the damn picture in the database I placed it in so I will post a new one here. The same goes with this one though I have worked more on it now and removed the black line art, I had planned to do that anyway. This one should be smaller I hope!
