I've been trying my hardest not to use really really dark tones or black because you can do so much more with color...but it's friggin hard...it seems the only way to achieve detail is using dark dark colors....ideas-- thoughts?

I think its all relative. If you imagine your midtone green as being a dark shadow then you wouldn't be seeing much detail within it anyway.

Well, I do those things in this way; first I use a background color, this one has to be the "dark" one (this one could be green it doesnt matter), and then I put the colors in layers on top to the "brightest" one (it could be neon red), like you do in traditional oils. It help me to do the things like that so I could do better atmosphere on the shadows...
I reckon your painting is a good try, but somehow you try to find the "black line", around the character, but that is your style and you shoud not change that... well thats my opinion Very Happy

I really like the drawing, It looks great to me.

ur lighting seems pretty good to me, defiately doesnt suck. And it looks like you got all the detail you need out of the face already w/o using any really dark shadows so it seems to me like u'v succeeded in what u were trying to accomplish. There are some parts where the orange lighting is off, such as his shoulder area (there wouldnt be any orange light there if its coming from belo). All in all it looks nice.
