Sometime ago, I looked into the tablet PC as compared to a laptop with a tablet. At that time, the separate tablet and laptop was much better technically (levels of preasure sensitivity, resolution, etc) than the tablet PC, so I purchased a Dell laptop with a 17" screen and 2 gig of RAM, along with a 9 x 6 Wacom tablet.
Then using an old plein air easel, I set myself up like so:
I like the irony of it....
With this setup, the laptop keyboard is also very easy to use for keyboard short cuts, typing or whatever... Since this has become my computing workstation for everything, I'm also getting an external USB keyboard for longer typing sessions...
Now my studio/office is pretty mobile...
Hope this is of interest to someone... _________________ HonePie.com

Very cool setup
I though couldn't work without a BIG table. I need lots of stuff around me, pens, markers, paper, reference books, et cetera. Is this angle not kinda uncomfortable for the laptop? Harddisc and so on...I dunno : ) |

hmmmm... I don't really know either. Hope not... I suspect it should not make a difference. Does anyone know? _________________ HonePie.com

I went on Dell's support chat line and asked the question... Here's the part of the chat that gives the word.
{PHILIP WILLIAMS 11:51:19 AM} Do you think that position is OK?
{nirosh 11:51:40 AM} This position wouldn't cause any problem to the hard drive.
{PHILIP WILLIAMS 11:51:57 AM} OK... great... Thanks for the info!

yup, laptops harddrives are very good at different positions.
they even make laptop setups like that to buy:
http://www.doubleii.com/detaillap.gif
also why laptop harddrives are somewhat behind computer desktop harddrives (technology and speed) because of the extreme testing they go through to handle drops, and different awkward positions people put them in. _________________ My signature is irrelevant |

Even desktop drives are fine at any angle.
They won't work in a vaccuum, though, so like, don't take them into outer space (the drive heads need a cushion of air to keep from crashing into the platters). _________________ brian.prince|light.comp.paint |

Wow that looks like a great setup! Perfect for painting from life! I would think a laptop hard drive would be more durable then a typical desktop computer hard drive. They have to have some durability to be in a piece of equipment thats expected to take some abuse. |

Useless but cool info like this makes my day.
Phil - how do you deal with monitor glare on a bright day? |

eyewoo - Another item you might want to add to that setup is an umbrella. It would be good to block out the light to keep the color rich on the lcd screen.
You could probably do it with a photo umbrella and a clamp adapter. Not too much cash invovled there.
Best,

...and hope the day is not windy, eh.
luna... I really haven't considered using the setup outside. It is intended more as a consistant setup that I can use to continue making a living as an illustrator while I'm traveling... keyboard shortcuts right where they should be, etc. I've added a small folding table in front so I don't have to hold the tablet in my lap... I've also added a small external keyboard that sits right where my left hand can reach it easily for shortcuts, etc.
hmmm... next wheels and an electric motor... _________________ HonePie.com

Very nice, hope its good and secure. I would prefer working on a PC no matter what, if not that then a tablet pc for drawing, makes things easier when portable Even if it is only for sketches. |

Yes... with the added dowels, it is very secure.
I liked the idea of a tablet PC too, but it became clear they are simply not designed for quality artwork. I checked into it pretty carefully and it became clear that a separate tablet attached to a PC is far better and more precise than a tablet PC. _________________ HonePie.com

My favorite part of this thread? That self-portrait of Phil sitting at his easel. There's something about the pose and perspective that make him look like he's having the time of his life piloting a fighter jet. _________________ QED, sort of. |

ha ha ha... actually in my last setup I felt like I was in a cockpit with monitors, computers, printers, keyboards all arouind me. This new setup has a much different feel - a mean, lean, creating machine...
I added a small folding table in front of the easel with a swing out narrow piece of masonite that holds a USB keyboard. The keyboard is right at my left hand, ready for keyuboard shortcuts. Works really well! It also makes it much easier to type for long typing sessions.
Here's a pic.
