This is a simple oversight on my part, but here it goes. Sometimes when using the lasso tool, it selects the area too soon. How do I go back one step before the marquee enclosed itself? It gets frustrating having to start the selection path all over again. Confused

Thanks. Wink

Just don't try to select everything at one go. Select some part, then Shift+click to add to selection. Alt+click to remove.

....or, go into quick mask before starting to select. Have your quick mask opacity set low and then start selecting... when you get tired, let the selection close and then fill it, relax, and then starting selecting again... fill it, relax, etc. etc. etc.

When you have your selected area, you can then zoom in and make refinements to the quick mask you've made.

Once you are done, hit the "Q" key and your selected area shows up with its ant line. "Q" takes you into and out of quick mask mode.

BTW... this works best if you have your selected area be the mask, i.e. show the color, which is the oposite of the default setting.

That's all very interesting, helpful, and I truely appreciate it. Still, none of it really answers my original question. When the marquee encloses itself, is there a way to go back one step before it closed?

The marquee will not go back at that point.

SLOWLY make your selections.

The other suggestions are good and they actually "do" answer your question.

I really do appreciate the afore mentioned advice. The only reason I'm so stubborn about this is I swear I use to know how to do it. Confused

it sounds like you're using the polygon lasso tool? so, hey!

1

you're clicking a lot to make a new selection point, and sometimes this is fast enough for "double clicking" to be engaged.

so: just change your computer's mouse doubleclick speed.

win98, logitech, for me it is:

start > settings > control panel > mouse > buttons > modify

(and i have button 3 for doubleclick)

2

use paths instead.

then you have to close the path manually, and it's all vector and that snazz. (a round area to be selected? just change it to a smoothing vector thing)

The alt-click suggestion Shizo made is a pretty good compromise, though.

After you do all the work and close the loop, if you use the alt button to scoop away the bad stuff, at least you are leaving your original good stuff intact from the first go-round.
