I REALLY need your guys' help. Im entering this scholarship competition for highschool students who are gradding thise year. First prize is a full tuition scholarship into this school's animation program. I've been working like mad to get everything done; (hell I just pulled a triple nighter so Im freaking exausted right now). The deadline is April 1st (Friday) but I'm aiming to hand this thing in on Thursday.
So I need you guys to give me a LOT of feedback and critisism on my stuff. Please please please be as anal as possible. Anything that pops into your head, any ideas, crits, suggestions, tips about ANYTHING WHATSOEVER please say something. This is real important
These pieces range from 2 years to 2 hours old.
(in no particular order)HERE WE GO!!
1) Requirement fulfilled: One color illustration or painting
Acrylic on canvas (36x24)
Color/atmosphere study, ref used.
2) Requirement fulfilled: One pencil drawing
Pencils (12x18)
Aargh awful photo quality. (I'll retake it later tonight) This piece was just a huge experiment of various techniques; it prolyl wasn't a good idea to take the risks I did with this one -_-
3) Requirement fulfilled: not required
Photoshop
I'm taking part in the Advanced Placement Studio Art course at my highschool, and one of the requirements is that you do a series of work all connected by some sort of theme or idea. I chose to redesign OZ as if it were to be rereleased as a videogame targeted towards a teen/adult audience (It would play sort of like LOTR ROTK for xbox). The characters on this page include Dorothy, Todo, 2 versions of the witch, a flying monkey and of course the infamous trio.
4) Requirement fulfilled: not required
Photoshop and Painter
Enviroment designs also for the Oz project.
5) Requirement fulfilled: one graphic design poster incoporating illustration, type and color
Photoshop
I had originally created the girl for a mascot contest; but I lost. But since I needed some graphic design thing, I figured she would a decent poster girl. Graphic design isn't really my thing
6) Requirement fulfilled: One black and white illostration using ink or markers
Ink - Sakura Microns Yea you heard me (10.5x11)
It's been just over a year since I completed this fucker. I was just started to understand perspective, but why the hell I chose to render with pens remains a mystery
7) Requirement fulfilled: not required
Pencil
Random character sketches; I'll probably add a couple more later
Requirement fulfilled: not required
Pencil and markers
Little bit rusty. Clockwise from top left: space communications scout, air fighter jet and space cargo. I'll probably add little notes arond the ships and point out their features (or lack thereof)
9) Requirement fulfilled: Atleast one figuredrawing
Conte
Damnit these pics didnt turn out good, I'll retake them later.
10) Requirement fulfilled: not required
I don't know if I should keep this one. It's just a bunch of study's and sketches and experiments that don't really deserve their own page.
Clockwise from topleft:
-a) acrylic on canvas - futurism based on giacomo balla's dog on a leash.
-b) acrylic on canvas - forshortening, atmosphere and slight surrealism study.
-c) Marker sketches - speed test, blank page to finished concept in 45min for each, (they're only a couple inches across)
d) Chalk pastel - still life study of reflective surfaces, drapery and color.
I don't intend to leave everything as is (cause its kind of sloppy); this is just a 'first draft portfolio'. I'll try and tidy things up so it's more presentable on wednesday before I send it in.
Yea so ANY feedback on ANYTHING will be inifinitly appreciatied. |

hey.. i think the first pic is definitely the best. i think it would be cool if you turned that advertisement with the bass chick into vector. i think it'd look better than a mediocre render. with the random character sketches, the guy holding a spear is anatomically incorrect. the muscles going from his shoulders to his neck are just WAY too big. those vehicle sketches look great. i think you should add some highlights to the figure drawing all the way on the right... but don't go overboard. good luck |

Some of your stuff seemed really good, and other works didn't seem as good. Like, maybe you can go back in and add more contrast to the second piece. It has a really washed out look; maybe go in with some stronger lines on the focal points as well.
As far as the OZ character concepts go, I'll tell ya, I saw Dorothy and was like "sweet." I love the sort of goth, timid yet underneth it all she's a firecracker, look. The only thing is that maybe u can try and rework the shadow underneath her. It seems like you just put it there for the hell of it, but esp on the pics with her arms out, there would be shadow there too. And I think a few more highlights in the places where the light hits it directly would be cool. Contrast is always good (though maybe you can't take my word for it). Toto seems kinda weird to me.....I like how he is briding the gap between the two sides, but I think you could do more with that. Try like, taking the part of him on the left side and changing the color a bit to coincide more with Dorothy, so it's like he's changing as he walks to the other side of the page...kind of like the movie changed when they first stepped out of the house from black and white to color. I dunno, just a thought. Also, his legs look off off to me.
The OZ level concepts...again, sweet. though I'm not sure you want to present them like that. Maybe have a line sepearting them or something, because for a second I thought that the upper concept was a flame coming out of the city.
I also think vector would be the way to go with the graphic design poster. her face (nose esp) looks weird to me.
I really dig the plane/shit concepts.
As far as the last one goes (the one ur not sure about) The thing as a whole did look kind of jumbled and didn't really impress me. I do like the second of the two quick marker sketches (the one with the house) and I kind of like the painting of the person sitting on teh bench. I think that maybe the picture quality of the chalk pastel one is making it look more washed out then it is, but I don't know. You are the final judge.
Oh, and before you start taking my advice; I'm only 17 and what I say may be wrong, but hopefully it sheds a bit of light on your work. Best of luck! Let us know how it turns out for you. |
