To all Amercian students:
How the hell can you afford to study?
why I ask:
Until now studying in germany was for free, they think about changing that into some fee of likely 1000$ per year.
Most students are pretty mad about that.
I know this is a joke compared to the fee you have to pay in america.
According to my information it is from 3000$ to 30000$ a year, depending on the college.
I WONDER HOW CAN YOU AFFORD THAT???
I know that this is also an insane amount of money for most american families, though nearly 40% of an age group are studying in the USA.
Could someone enlighten me? I'm really curious about that. _________________ marek |

Actually, we don't afford it. it's called loans and credit. it's called massive debt. It's called a hole you'll never climb out of after you fight so hard for that stupid piece of paper that doesn't garautee you anything. |

Well considering the money I put into college (which I borrowed), if I had to do it all over again, I'd either go to Art Center in Pasadena, SCAD or the Portfolio Center. Yeah. Pricey. But some of these schools have high expectations for the students, and that's a good thing when hitting the workforce.
American colleges, you must remember, are not only academic institutions but businesses as well. They want to make money. Private schools with highly specialized programs and the experienced faculty to back them are going to charge more. _________________ - Tom Carter

Swedish Universities are free and I don't think we're about to change that any time soon, which is nice. You pay for your student literature but that's pretty much it. I guess there's a reason we have among the highest taxes in the world ![Smile](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

Think of it this way Silber. I live in the CHEAPEST state for college tuition. Only $26 a unit.
I take 16 units this semester...
16x26= $416 for 1 semester.
16units equal to about 5 classes.
each class has books. Each book(even the used ones) cost around $80-120.
Now, $100x5classes=$500.
416+500= $916 for just 1 semester. Then there are 3 semesters in a year. So count yourself how much it costs me for one year.
Please note that these are Community College figures. When I transfer to a university, 16 units costs around $2,500.
I make at most around $250-300 a month. So I barely support myself. Which means living at home.
I agree with the above folks, we don't deal with it. It is called "loans" start getting used to it European folk. ![Wink](images/smiles/icon_wink.gif) |

I have this sneaking suspicion that all the money I pay for college goes towards hiring literally thousands of cute girls in short skirts to stand around and ignore me.
It sure don't as hell go for making my thinking smarter, I'll tell you for sure that much.
(oh, and a lot of [if not most] parents help out with their kid's tuition, not mention scholarships, grants and federal aid available to students) _________________ QED, sort of. |

I'd like to know what people who've been to Art Center and schools like that think. Do you think it's possible to get the same information elsewhere, or do self taught people always end up lacking something when it comes to concept design and illustration?
Seems that many pro's have studied in such places, is that because they teach so well or just pick the people with best portfolios to begin with? |

It's quite simple really. Everyone in this country is insane. The US travelers abroad, the movies, music, media, and everything else that you learn from about the USA is part of a carefully orchestrated illusion to give the rest of the world the impression that we Americans are sane and rational human beings.
Rap music? Pop stars? Grotesque SUVs? You should see what we actually do here. In the USA we don't even drink water, our childhood spent in American schools prevents this. Instead, we buy bottles of gasoline to drink and bathe in a mixture of fermented corn syrup and crude petroleum.
Student loans you say? Well, they definitely do exist, but probably not for the reasons you'll be lead to believe. You see, here in America, we enjoy culturing a healthy amount of discontent among our citizens. We figure that the more money we owe, the more we have to work. The more that we have to work, the more we will hate living. The more we hate living, the more everyone in this country can work together effectively to create a future tomorrow bright with prosperity and material success.
Now I know all this might seem strange to you at first, but I assure you that all is well in America and we know exactly what we are doing. |
