Is there a way to change the cursor color tip for your brush in photoshop 7.1?

no. You can hold down the space bar to turn it into a hand if you lose your place, but the cursor color is hard coded.

I think the way it is now, colour of the background inverted is about as good as it gets. The only problem areas are when the value of the area being worked on is near 50% gray. Some other apps have cursors that have a fixed colour and they are much harder to see much more often.
