i bought samsung 193P
1. when I plug it via DVI my refresh rate is 60 Hz when i plug it via RGB it's 72 Hz !! Why ? witch one should i use.
2. It's not so easy on the eyes ! when i read black text on white background my eyes are starting to hurt after very short period of time. In fact they are hurting me right now. I lovered the contrast and brightness so i hope this will help (keep in mind that at work i use some crappy CRT + last time i had a break from sitting in front of monitor for longer than a day was in summer... so maybe it doesn't matter for my eyes what i look at because i've been torturing them for too long) But still is it normal for an LCD with high contrast to be so strong that your eyes can be in pain ?
I tried that thing with puting light behind the monitor but it distracts me, i'cant work that way.
Any thoughts on thouse subjects. Thank you for any input. _________________ portfolio | art blog |

Hey man, my first TFT (a replacement) has been a disaster, just packed it up for a refund a few minutes ago.

There's a general rule that it's 60Hz, and the manual I got with mine states that if it's not set at 60Hz then it should be for "optimal effect", whatever that means. Check the Quickstart guide and manuals to see whether there's a specific refresh that should be used. For the record, the TFT I had allowed you to set it at 75Hz in the monitor settings. Didn't seem to make any difference at all.

Well, brightness was the reason I've sent 2 TFT monitors back to the manafacturer. I'm beginning to wonder whether I should have spent more money on a higher end LCD. I bought an LG monitor in a group buy, but it's crap. The chroma scale is totally screwed and the brightness is crazy. It's like the back-light is working at 150% intensity. I've tried lowering the brightness, playing with the contrast, installing calibration software... even lowering the gamma on my graphics card!
This was the first one I bought, check out dark colours at the bottom:
This is the replacement one they sent me. That's a black screensaver btw...

hey oDD
have you tried adjusting the gamma? so its not so white?
what lighting do you have in your room?
remember that TFT / LCD's don't refresh like conventional monitors they change pixel colour/shade, so its all down to the pixel response times use the DVI connection for a better picture..
some of the higher res TFT's use an even lower input refresh than 60hz.. (not that you needed to know that..)
ceenda, its a shame that you bought a low end TFT. LG are a good manufacturer of TFT's (make apples TFT's), but for artwork and general quality, the old saying applies - more u spend on a TFT the better it will be |

B0b: I know, typical scots mentality at work...
The DELL Ultrasharps at work have been great, but they're still pricy. So I think I'll splash out for something higher end.
I was actually worried that I'd pay out for a top of the range model only to find that it had dead pixels which weren't enough for a replacement. Seems that there's a downside to being miserly too. Maybe I'll wait for a couple of years and get a 19" CRT in the meantime. |

Thanks for sharing your experience ceenda. This type of thinking can lead you to waiting forever, but on the other hand it's not a bad idea. If you will buy more expensive LCD the uneven backilght problem will be less visible. I don't know if this is true but it seems to me that dead pixels occur less often on newer/more expensive LCDs, new technology ? (I don't have dead pixels on my TFT, for now... )

Thanks Bob, your replys are always helpfull, tell me what kind of lighting i should have maybe some kind of link to proper LCD set up. I read something about this in the past but i probably don't know much enough. _________________ portfolio | art blog |

Also may want to move the screen away from any electrical object, I see a powerstrip directly behind it.. might be a shielding issue. _________________ .::astrochimp.net::. |

yeah dead pixels are always a worry, but dead pixels usually come about from poor handling..
i have a dead pixel near the centre of my laptop screen, fortunately with a res of 1400x1050 on a 14" screen its a tiny dot and i don't notice it unless i'm looking for it now

i was just wondering if you had strip lighting or some other strange setup that would cause your eyes to strain when looking @ the screen..
setting your gamma should cure the bright white problem, have you set a monitor profile under colour management in the display control panel? did your display come with any drivers? |

I dont know if this will apply to you... i sat for about 6 years, thats ~8 hours a workday in front of a CRT. When i switched to LCD first couple of weeks was a little uneasy on the eyes. I wanted to go back to CRT. Turned out my eyes got used to the slight vibration of CRT and were probably trying to accomodate for it on LCD where there is no vibration. But now that i am used to LCD, its exactly the opposite. Give it time.
Use DVI - clearer picture. Refresh rate 60 or 72 is irrelevant. All about response time on those pixels. |

yeah i've done all that, i'm trying to sit less in front of a computer for now to let my eyes rest, ive made the brightess lower i think all that should help. For egzample its cool now..

thats very interesting, i spend more than 8 hrs in front of a CRT so -getting used to- could also be the factor. Thanks i will keep that in mind.
And i'm switching to DVI now. _________________ portfolio | art blog |
