Allright, now I am in a mess.
I have been spending some time reading about saturaration in all the tutorials and books about art I have found, and each one says what I think are contradictory things.
Some say saturation is most intense in the highlights, while others say it is in the midtones. Furthermore all agree shadows must be desaturated, but watching some of this forum members' art, I have discovered some use high saturation in the shadows with nice results.

My own experiments lead me to:

* Maximum saturation in highlights
* Medium in midtones
* Minimum at shadows

What is the "real truth"?

I don't think there is such a thing as a "real truth", whatever works for you will be best. Not knowing why you're doing certain things might end up flattening your work. Specific areas should not be bound to have a certain percentage value of sautration (in terms of digital art), but should rather be relative to other areas.

Okay, some tricks, then. I try to put my highest saturated (purest) colors in my midtones, and leave highlights at low saturation. I wouldn't want a highlight that screams "ULTRAMARINE!" rather than illumination, but again, it could work if the rest of the picture is rather dark. Maybe if you're painting a character inside a dark coalmine where the only light source is a blue headlight left on the ground. And for shadows, I usually keep them at low or medium, and instinctively end up putting some complementaries in them if necessary.

I hope I didn't get it all wrong. Smile
