Hello.

How is everyone? This is my first time to this fourm. I was reffered here by an administrator of digitalart.org.

I'm currently a Senior in High School, and every senior is required to do a senior project on a topic of their choice. I have picked Digital Art/Graphics as my topic, because I'm really interested in it, and want to learn more about it.

As a requirment to the senior project I have to write a 12-15 page paper on Digital Art/Graphics. Within the paper, I would like to talk about the history/birth of Digital Art/Graphics, Diffrent types of mediums, and art, how digital art relates to things like(EX: TV, Movies, Games, etc), and overall information about digital art.

I have searched google and many search engines for resources to such information about Digital Art/Graphics, but to no anvail I haven't found any of real use to me.

I'm posting to ask for you guys/girls help. Does anyone have any resources that explain what I am looking for? Links, articles, etc.

Thank you for your time.

Knox

I was actually watching a Flash presentation over at Hash.com about the history of CG today. It's a little focused on Hash's animation product, but it's a decent overview of the 3D side of things.

First part of the "lecture": http://www.s1.hashmirror.com/ftp/VM/Hx_animation/hx_anim.html
Second part:
http://www.s1.hashmirror.com/ftp/VM/Hx_animation/hx_anim_2.html

Not the greatest thing ever, but there's some good info in there. They're about 4-5 megs each.

Digital art started in the 70's, and it was very crappy. Andy Warhol played a small part in this.

Here's a development of digital art timeline from 1956 up to 1998. Found it right away on Google...

Also, lot of reading on this list....

Damnit, Phil. You posted the link I was going to. Very Happy

Anyways, when you're writing this paper, consider the why/how the following have changed digital art:

1. Consumerization of the computer (it's no longer the Cold War death machine that it originally was)
2. Advances in computer code
3. The Graphical User Interface (Macintosh, Windows..)
4. Human interfacing (mouses, keyboards, tablets, etc.)
5. The internet

I would definitely rank Evans and Sutherland's development of the frame buffer as one of the most important events in computer graphics. All displays prior to that were drawn in hollow, monochrome vectors by the electron gun (think of the old game "Asteroids"). The frame buffer allowed for a fully rasterized pixel display, with unlimited color detail.
