Art from the Fleshrot Halloween Special:

The Zombie Ball, page 1

"If you'd like to see a sight
To set your skin acrawl,
Come with me on Hallow's Night
To see the Zombie Ball!

Round the smarmy toadstool bed
On Amanita Lane
Merry dance the mouldy dead
Who've come to life again.

First there wobbles Squashed Hedgehog
Who fell beneath a car.
Then leaps lively Half-a-Frog
(How tasty frog-legs are!)

Next comes Rotten Rex the Rat
Corrupted to the bone
And in his trail of maggots fat
Comes Stinky Bird, alone.

Bringing up the putrid rear
With guts upon his feet
Pond'rous twirls, amid loud jeers
The shrew who lived to eat."

Want to know what this zombie is doing, and what happened to all those cute little zombie critters? Go to www.fleshrot.com and buy the book! /spam

It is Photoshop 7, using the square brushes between 5px x 5px and 27px x 27px, and the round brushes 128px and 300px for larger areas of shading.

Creepy. Which I assume is what you were going for. Smile

I think you need to push the value composition in the first one -- it takes a long time to get a read on what's going on in the picture. The values of the second one (my fave) are much more readable.

Sumaleth - Thanks! I actually prefer the first one, though--the second one is easily readable, yeah, and I know it's the convention nowadays. But I've been looking at a lot of older illustrations lately, and a lot of them don't pop out at you in quite the same way. You have to really LOOK at them, explore them with your eyes. You end up getting less of an instant effect, and more of a cumulative effect, as you discover new details and intricacies. (I may have pushed it a LITTLE too far in that direction--still getting used to doing things this way--but I don't think I'd change it if I could. The second one, to me, is all "WOO ZOMBIE...okay, what's next?" The first one is more..."OH! There's ANOTHER zombie in there! And...and...are there eyes in the bushes?" Well, that's what it's supposed to be, anyway. Ha, ha.)

Jensen, eyewoo - Thanks a lot!

Okay, yes, I can see what you're saying. More illustrative and less design. And it definitely works in that context.
