I was shopping for a 19" CRT monitor and found these two on sale,
Starlogic 19" CRT for 139.99
and
Envision 19" CRT for 159.00
which one is better? they both seem to have the same specs but i really cant tell other than how high the resolution goes. |

Congratulations for picking a CRT. I think LCDs are way over-rated.
They hurt my eyes. You still can't beat a good .20 or .21 dot pitch CRT.
Frankly I've never heard of either of those companies.
Do a web search for the companies and try to find the specs.
If and when you do...pick the resolution you'll be working at,
say... 1280X1024... then check the spec. sheet for each
monitor. Pick the one with the fastest refresh rate at 1280X1024.
If they are equal then pick the one with the lowest dot pitch.
...and don't get a monitor with a pitch that's higher than .26
Anything higher is an eye-killer.
NewEgg has a .22 x .26 dot pitch 19" CTX that's 85Hz @ 1280X1024
for $139.
Go to www.newegg.com and search for Item # N82E16824103171
Don't worry the system will default to a basic 640X480 in the initial phase.
Then just install the new drivers. The machine will reboot and come back up
with the new drivers installed. It will take care of itself. |

CRTs are very affordable and a good direction for those wanting two displays but short on coin; however, I disagree that LCDs are overrated; I used one here at work before getting two CRTs, and I do miss it. It was a better picture and took up less space on my desk. The only drawback to them is expense.
But as soon as I can afford it I'll two LCDs. Seriously. Moving forward. _________________ - Tom Carter

That's interesting. What is the pitch of your current CRTs,
and what was the model LCD you had to give up?
My current service bureau's customer courtesy workstation's
monitor is a Samsung 1100DF.
It's .20mm and can do 2048X1536 @ 75Hz.
I just can't imagine any LCD of any kind matching that.
When my current monitors die, that's what I want to replace
them with.
I've done pre-press for about 14 years and have been
trying to transistion to video for about 3. I've yet to see
an LCD that could match the CRT color range and not at some
point show ghosting in some aspects of video work.
That isn't a challange, I just want to know for my own
information, what LCD can do that. |

Interesting?
I don't do video except as an enthusiast, and I don't do prepress either, but when I did the LCD was fine. I'm in web development - the ol' RGB spectrum for the most part.
I had a Dell UltraSharp 2001FP but traded it off for two CRTS (Viewsonics).
When I used the LCD I thought it was great - lightweight and it didn't hurt my eyes, but the one thing that made it better than a CRT was that you could use it in a brightly lit area without washout. _________________ - Tom Carter

Yeah, that's interesting... ...especially the part about being viewable
in a space where there's lot's of bright fill light.
Do you know what the 2001FPs pitch is?
-------------
Edit:
I found it.
It's .255mm and 1280X1024 @ 60Hz |
