I'm an indie comic colorist/writer and I'm trying to use Photoshop for my nefarious purposes. The one thing that has me stuck is metallic objects; How would one get a good metallic shine on, say, a gun?

Try a lot of black to white solid gradients, then create a new layer set to color dodge and start dabbing white with the airbrush on that new layer...you should get some really brilliant metallic glows.
Preferably use a brush that's edited so its flattened a bit (not perfectly round) and adjust the angle so it follows the barrel of the gun...keep dabbing and it should look really great (I use this technique often).
Good luck
