I have been thinking a lot recently about moving to L.A. and going to school for illustration. I am a professional 3d artist, but I have always felt that my lack or drawing skills has held me back from getting to that next level. Ever since I came to this forum I have realised how much there is for me to learn.

Can anyone recommend a school in L.A. with a great illustration program? I am not interested in a degree or anything, just the knowledge. I know I will probably never be as good as Mullins, but I feel there is a big hole in my artistic skill that is preventing me from getting better. I need to start with the very basics, and I am willing to devote 100% of my time to learning. Right now I only have enough money to take off maybe a year from work to devote to this.

I am looking forward to any recommendations you guys have. Thanks for listening to me! To me this is a very important time in my life and I want to make sure I make the right decisions.

Thanks man. I have always been ashamed tol myself an artist because I am so bad at drawing. I mean, I am so-so when it comes to figure drawing if you give me enough time, but I swear its stick-figues if I don't have something to draw from.

Can anyone help me with some advice? I have asked all my friends, but so far they havn't been of any help.

Thanks again everyone!

Well, I went to Otis some years ago, and it was great. My drawing skills improved dramatically. I never will be even remotely as good as some of the artists here, but before I went to Otis I could draw from life okay, but I couldn't draw without a model, at all. Now, I can draw from a model . . . "okay." I'm not great, but considering how AWFUL I was before, I am doing fine. I made a dramatic improvement. And was definitely because of what I learned at Otis. I took artistic anatomy classes galore.

Also, I believe Art Center (in Pasadena) has a pretty good illustration program and will offer similar figure drawing/anatomy classes. Check out both schools' websites, go drive down and visit both schools, and see what you think.

I just found out Mullins went to Art Center in Pasadena. Has anyone else gone to the Art Center? And Craig, if you are reading this, I am sorry I keep bringing you up, I just would love to understand light as well as you do.

Otis looks really cool to me, I bookmarked it and I will defiantly check it out when I am in LA next.

Art Center - but you might have to commit to a couple of years to get what you want out of it. Lots of criticism of the school floating about but it's probably your best bet - it's rep is outstanding.

I have a degree in Illustration from Art Center College of Design. But it was ages ago--before all the digital stuff--so I'm not sure if I could help at all. The illustration program is good there, though.

There are whole discussion threads on various art schools, including Art Center, on other forums like conceptart.org. You might want to check them for more information.
