from pic in the speedpaint. Neated up the background, and tweaked it up a little.
progresses: (drawing)(1, 2)
On this one I was mainly struggling trying to figure how to reveal the form and make it convincing. I completely failed and felt way outta my depth so I just gave up. Had no idea what I was doing.
I was tryna get the planes of the figure but I was just too stupid to work it out. I was overhwhelmed. I spent about 2 hours making some bits lighter and others darker, then marking them lighter and the other bits darker again.. I started at it vauge and ambiguos, just having a doodle, so it didn't really stand up to me trying to tighten it up.
As always, eager to learn. please feel free to criticise on any level.

Capt'n I really like this one, u surely are getting dangerous with your brush.
One thing that looks a little weird and that is the the top of the helmet and if and what kind of cast-shadow that hose would give. Is it one spot-light back above? Just curious about your thinking there.
Otherwise, that reflection work is really awesome I must say.
keep up the good work Fred.

thanks warhead, and thank you matthew!
You're right about the pipe shadow. I hadn't noticed it. I tried fixing it but I decided to leave it, becuase the shape of the helmet and pipe all seems pretty clear anyhow and it looks cooler without a big hooping shadow across it.
ended up doing a bit more scribbling on this one, 'detailing'/'finishing'. I've never done that or felt inclined to do that before, but it's just more of the same I suppose - no real distinction.
i think the arms are okay, but the creases on the fabric of the chest look abismal and stupid. Very crap. It's also bad between arm and body on both sides, where it just goes black and it looks dumb - at the moment I can't quite imagine how to fix that. I'll have to think about that. I just need to paint with some thought to the geometry, and the lighting on the figure.

Figure is great but I have something to say about spotlight. It seems that the light is right above figures helmet. The illusion is because rays of light are spread all over the background of helmet and there is no fog or rain or anything. Maybe background should be without light gradians? |

sorry not to have replied here. my computer's been lying on my floor since friday or something, moving from place to place.. so anyway
thanks watmough. yeah too many hard edges is probably right. I just used a triangular custom brush becuase I don't really now how I'd paint a mounatin. Lazy!
lemur, thanks :) Petteri, I think I toned down the gradient in the most recent one. I think. I'm not sure I understand your meaning but the spotlight is lighting up the mist/dust in the air. Reason it doesn't affect the whole background is that there's no light (from the sky or sun or whatever) to light up the air so it doesn't accumalate like a foggy distance-haze. I could be wrong on this.
godwin, allpetter, thank you :) I guess the branding is just a bit of fun, no harm done, right?
The final pic is here: Click
For the sake of repetation there's not much point in showing the pic, it's just the same as the detail shot but the whole thing. Zoomed out like this, you can see how I screwed up the main values as I detialed it, compared to the first ones. |
