Some of you might have seen this one in the WIP thread. Getting really really tired of it for the amount of detail needed in this piece. But I'm liking the new composition and colors so I post in the Finished section.

I was aiming for realism here. So if any of you have techniques or crits you can share to make this more realistic it would be very appreciated. I'll pick up this piece again if anyone spots a 'fatal' mistake and inspires me to do it again.

Thanks ^^

Hiho,

I think the rocks turned out very good. They look really realistic to me. One thing that breaks it for me are the trees on that one hill in the lower left, because they are crisp and detailed whereas the other trees in the front and in the background are not rendered in that way. That makes this hill pop out so much. If you would change that hill to fit more in between the rest of the green, that would help the pic a lot.
Also the green in the lower middle could use a tad more detail like it is in the lower right (which fits really well in there I think).

hey skull.

I like it but I thought of some things and since u asked for help I could add some things here, I made a quick overpaint just to show u at the same time. Waterfalls usually gets very diffusing with water and foam from it like fog, depends on size of it though and weather condition aswell, I think u need more attention there in your piece.
The cliff looks very good but could use some color variety perhaps to boost it a little bit more, that is what I have understood from rocks and cliffs at this time.
ok I hope some helped and maan I am getting tired, bedtime right about now so I hope didn't ramble here.
keep up the good work. Smile

good night

Thanks for the comments. As far as the details are concerned they are all over the place simply because I jumped from place to place and got bored. [bad habit]And for the color variation on the rocks, I was playing around with it but since it was in shadows, I didn't know how to handle it, I certainly didn't want to overdo that area because it was a shadow area too.
Thanks for the overpaint matthew!
Any suggestions on the rocks?

I just noticed that the pool of water is WAY out of perspective. How could I miss that?

Did a quick paintover. Removing some of the detail in the left corner as antx metioned and detailed the trees in the front a bit more. Used a lot of brushes and different layers to get a bit more texture. If you want matte-painting realism you should use photos as you did in the left corner, but then you need to go into that kind of detail in the rest of the picture as well. Less detail in the background and more detail in the foreground of course.

not trying to correct Fiend here or something but I would say go with less detail til u have decided how to take your piece further. Even Realism can be made with very few brush strokes, there's a girl in my class who can do that, achieve realism with just a few brush strokes.

From what I can see in the detailed foliage to the left in that shrubbery it is very far away which makes the waterfall very big. I don't think u can see that pool in that angle, especially if there is trees closer to us.
ok ok I will not bug u with this anymore.

see you and keep up

SkullMonkeys!
Great work on this one. I really like it!
The realism is almost perfect at places...

But...
Sharpen it up by adding more detail.
Add better contrast by adding shadows at the right places.
Same goes for light...

Last but nor leest!
Let color flow...

das berpaint!
