Wow that's a tall order, but uhm, maybe I can help clarify.
Make a shape, on a new layer, and fill with a gradient, from top to bottom with say a darker blue (not too dark) to a light blue color.
Duplicate that layer, make it white, and fade it from bottom to top (just whisp over the top half with the eraser set to a large soft brush). Now resize that shape so it just fits inside the first one, so you see kind of a darker color show through, in this case, the blue.
Now duplicate your original shape again, (make sure its under your SECOND shape, and on top of your FIRST) and have it completely white, and resize it so it fits inside, like you did to the second shape. Now chop the top off so you get a thick white piece of the shape, that will show through the 'fade' you gave the second shape.
Everything in words is confusing I know, but hopefully you're starting to see something like those big grey buttons on the apple.com site. If not, I'm trying
It's very hard to explain here without more thought on the writing and some visual aids so maybe I can consider this for one of the tutorials on my new site? I've just done the technique the way I figured it was done, and it looks pretty close to what apple has anyway.
Good luck

Damn, I couldn't get it to work Scoop Thanks so much for typing all that out though It pisses me off, damnit. I wanna duplicate the effect that you see in that big blue X when you first enter their page, but it's like .. hard and stuff
Again, thanks for taking the time to write that out.

make a square gaussian blur it, select the burred square, fill the selection, you then have a rounded square,..
goto select/modify border,.. depending on the size of the image is the number ou have here,. and also depends on how much of a rise you want on the button,.. choose 10,. whaddahell,. anyway highlight the top with a white airbrush, the botton with a dark one. or use dodge and burn,. voila,. you basically have what you see there,.
if youhave eye candy filters, they'll make it look a little prettier,. but this is a basic way to do this,. |
