I inquired about the possibility of placing some of my children's picture book illustrations on the http://www.storyopolis.com/ website - a large children's book store. Here is their response... It certainly speaks for itself.
=========================
Dear Phil,

Thank you for your interest in Storyopolis. Your images are delightful and creative. We currently work with artists who do not use the computer as their main medium, that is we prefer the more traditional ways of creating art-pencils, acrylics or oils. If your books are available in print and we can sell them, you might want to contact our book buyer, [email protected] so he can arrange to sell them and perhaps plan a future date to have a Saturday reading event for children(we have an upcoming November event that might be of interest-with several other author/illustrators). If he is interested then we can discuss having a few images for your event, but on the whole, we currently and typically deal with more traditional mediums for our artwork.
Regards,
================

Just a few minutes ago I read on "Art Scene International" that in germany its getting harder to buy airbrush illustration board because paper mills stop production. Digital is the future I would say. Those who do not want to see this will sink with the ship. Art Directors want to pay less from year to year. So they have to accept that artists cut their costs by using digital means.

@ eyewoo:

Your stuff is phantastic! Their reaction is this way because they see this. It would not bother them if digital would still look digital and could not compete with traditional. But in the long run they will see the dead end. And then they will panic and you can make a fortune by teaching them painter and photoshop. Wink

I took the liberty of writing a reply for you:

Dearest snob,

Regretfully, I do not accept correspondence over the computer, and will require a hand-scribed rejection letter on cold-press parchment, delivered by pony.

Your prompt expedition of this matter is appreciated, as the huns have nearly breached our walls, and I fear they may be of a disposition to seize my collection of rare brushes, including one fashioned from the nose hairs of my aunt's Peruvian river otter.

Such a loss would be personally devastating to me, so I shall make haste to the boggy woods upon receipt of your scroll..

Traditionally yours,
Lord Phil "eyewoo" Barnabus Queenshound III, Esq.

That is funny ballistic.

I suppose some people are simply ignorant. I look at your art Eyewoo, and wonder if anybody could possibly be able to tell the difference between a print or painting if your were to print on a texture medium. Foolishness.

That's hilarious reading there balistic.

It's a shame really. They lose some good stuff...
I was just about to say ...next time, don't even bother telling them it's digital, just print it and send them the printed copies, they'll never know what hit 'em.

good one bman. Laughing

phil, someone who would say what they wrote to you probably don't know the digital medium very well, so if you really want to be shown in such a site, i would suggest you tell them it was acrylics or painted with yeowoe, a new medium you founded in the mountains of india. then they'd call you revolutionary and a pioneer! and if that doesn't work, mail them some poop.

jr... that's not really the way I'd want to do it. My feeling is that every medium has it's own signature. An oil painting looks like it was painted in oils. A pastel looks like pastel. Water color looks like watercolor. Looked at with any sense of media, it is clear that my work is done digitally. I have no desire or wish to mask that. My admiration and love for the medium would not allow me to do that.

As a postscript, one of my prejudices is against digital media programs that try to look like traditional media. Its just a philosophical thing or something such. Don't think I'll get over it... Smile

balistic's letter has me rollin', just rollin'. This officially makes this the funniest thread I've read so far this year. As far as the reply goes, I guess it's descriminating, but I guess they can cling to the sinking ship like rats, but they left the door open to keep in contact since they probably figure it'll come to that anyway.

The walls of Storyopolis are covered with original paintings and drawings, which they sell. Maybe that's why they like traditional media -- so they can sell the originals. The other reason is, yeah, they are probably just snobs.

I hesitate to even use the word snob, because "snob" implies someone who won't settle for second class, and there's nothing second class about digital.

I hope they don't discover any of William Joyce's Rolie Polie Olie books on their shelves. Out they'll have to go.

Ditto for the Rust Boy book I guess

Even though I agree that digital is the future... who cares dude. Digital is just a medium like all the rest, wether it's pastel, acrylic, or oil. It definetly has it's own "look" unless your a realy good artist who has mad skill.

Sorry but this isn't prejudice.

personally phil, i have to say it's a definite shame when someone even of your talent can be pushed aside for more "traditional" media. you put a great deal of effort into working with textures even at magnified levels, so you'd *think* people would notice the difference (that's the biggest complaint i hear - no texture in digital stuff). i guess this shows that it really doesn't even matter what it looks like, texture or not... the word "digital" is all these people fear! we have only time on our side then...

Not too long ago acrylics were not given the respect of other "traditional" medium. How long did it take artists to get over that? 30 years or so?

Yes, I remember that time... some people thought the acrylics did the work. I think 30 years or so is a good estimate... for acrylics. I waffle with digital. It may take longer or because of the Internet and advancing printer and monitor technology, it may take less time.
