I feel a little discouraged by the amazing quality of the work most of you do Sad . Is anyone willing to put their pride on the shelf and post some pics from when they wern't so "l33t"? I think this would be encouraging to the artists that arn't so good...and probably kinda funny. Please don't post if you would be offended by your art being torn apart...who knows what will happen if we get people digging up images from like 10 years ago Shocked

if a thread like this already exists please point me in the right direction. Smile

This is one of the first pictures I ever did using Photoshop, circa 1994. I called it "The Diplomats Exchange."

OK... now that *was* fun... hadn't looked at that for some time... gad!

weaselball2: Don't you think you could post less images and we'd still get the idea? Wink

I remember some threads like this one but none worth digging up.
Just like eyewoo's post they were never as encouraging as the guys who started them hoped.
There are some good examples though. A lizard by Prometheus|ANJ if I remember correctly ...
(can't dig that one up)

and a 40 hour drawing back then compared with a newer 20 minute study by Lung Bug. (Down right now?)
Link

The problem with threads like this one is that it is hard to capture skill levels.
Was reference used? How much time did the image take?
It makes a huge difference.
Those images by me were done pretty much at the same skill level.
Speed Painting - no reference
Took longer - from reference

I redid the teddy more than a year later, not as a speedpainting:
Result

I think people who learn the theory behind drawing/painting AND draw a lot improve a lot.
Those who "just draw, draw and draw" don't.
The other extreme (me) doesn't improve that much either.

The mindblowing art here is the result of years of experience.
Those artists haven't learned painting from viewing the speedpainting thread.
And check out Lung Bug's sketchbook at CA. When artists improve it is not a miracle.

that was fun going into the basement. Scary down there.

All these are from 95-96. I was just starting to figure out that you could paint with PS.

for the movie contact. I was promptly fired after I was given overnight to do this. Concept for beach scene where she meets dad, etc.

I have no idea what this was for, as I remember I did not even bill for it. I have become a better businessman.

For Prince of Egypt, from Darek Gogols drawing, promptly never used.

edit, hey I just got a flat file off ebay and I am going through old stuff. I found an oil sketch of my room, I remember I did it the night before I started art center. Sunday night, Ted Youngkin at 9 the next morning. I will scan and post if you want. It is kinda depressing, though. I like it! I have not improved at all in 20 ****ing years

somebody fired you for that????? geeeez!!! I saw some of your work for that movie and it was really good, even this one is pretty good. There is no way you havent improved in 20 years! Even your recent(ish?) switch to digital probably made you improve a lot.

popeye: I wish I had some of your recent work, but all the links I find on the forums to your other art dont work. Sad

keep postin guys, im sure all of you have those bmps rusting on your hard drives from 1993 when windows paint was considered new. Very Happy

1995, fifteen years old, mouse/386 and a copy of Autodesk Animator:

that game would've been so kick-ass. Too bad my coder bailed on me.

Thanks for sharing your old work guys. I actually find threads like this very interesting.

This is one of my first digital pieces, done around 2000 or so, on an old PowerMac 6100 (60 MHz) and Painter Classic. Just done freehand, goofing around. It's not so bad, I guess (considering how old and creaky the computer was). Can't say I've gotten that much better with my digital skills yetI don't do enough digital work yet.

This here's my earliest existing work. It's done in color pencils and airbrush. It's a n00b art because it was my first time using those two mediums.
Done years ago, so that's when I was 17. [the good ol days]
Haven't drawn much ever since I did this one and it's been only 4 months since I started to paint in photoshop... was occupied by learning 3d appz like maya. What a waste of time.

Enough blabbing here goes..

hehe funny

yeah there was a thread like this http://forums.sijun.com/viewtopic.php?t=31221&highlight=

here is the fruit of my discovery that there is knowledge behind drawing. I was amazed that people are 8 head heigh , that you can use a circle as a base for drawing a head and stuff like that. For the first year or even more i tried to keep my rare and short drawing sessions as a secret.

balistic: that game looks awesome

Quote:

spooge: yeah i suspected that you were awesome even when you were younger. show that pic i'm curious.

Spooge, let's see that oil painting!! I'm quite curious.

ok here's one from me, found on an OLD floppy (damn those things last much longer than I thought)

It was painted on the Amiga, with Deluxe Paint 3. I've resized it here cos it's just 320x256. Anyway, don't laugh too hard because this picture landed me the first prize in a graphics contest! I believe i got 50 SEK and a whole lot of coca cola...

I was 14 when I did this Smile

Some quick - very quick - charcoal sketches. Must have been done in the late 1960s when I was a student.

cheap comic books drawn with a mouse, through red eyes ( someone remembers the crap hi-res mode of the amiga ? I think i lost a couiple of eyes because of that one - Why not with a pencil ? I'll never know ... jeeez... I must have 15 or so, at that time.

pixel stuff from my first game. can't find many of those I did earlier than that... thanks good for that. seeexy colors, bravo !

early years of painter ( I can remember I had yet no idea how to hide that bloody paper under the aquarelle tool ) some concept stuff for a game that never went very far...

Okay, here some from me:

1990/91 Amiga 500 (512kB ram) Deluxe Paint 2/3. I was 15/16 and spend a lot of time back then dreaming up games and made graphics for them: Very Happy

1990/91 Amiga 500 (512kB ram) Deluxe Paint 2/3. for a "Landsitz von Mortville" clone I wanted to make:

1991 Amiga 500 (512kB ram) Sculpt Animate 4D. My first 3D pic ever. I made every vertex, every edge and every polygon by hand (Those were the times when 3D artist were still real men Laughing ). Took ages to render. It was rendered in a mode called lowres-interlace-Ham6 (320x512 in 4096 colors).

1992 Amiga 500 (1MB ram)Real 3D 1.0 Demoversion. I could not save in that version so I modeled it, rendered it, made a screenshot and then flushed it. At some point I bought Real 3D 1.2 classic to be able to keep my meshes.

1994 Amiga 1200 (6MB ram) Maxon Cinema 4D 2.0.

1995 Amiga 1200 (6MB ram) Maxon Cinema 4D 2.0. That one is a special one for me because that one got me my first job. I should print it and hang it somewhere. Wink

This is amazing ! I am really in shock when i see the drawings you guys were doing at 15-16. At that time my best attempt was to try to write my name with my left hand to forget about that boring history/mathematic/you-name-it class. I feeel so ..late ?

I only started to draw at 20 after securing an IT diploma to make my parents happy Razz

Things have really changed now, i m a compulsive maniac and can't get outside my house without trying to vizualize surface normals and find midtones.

So i m still in noob stage, and hope to be promoted padawan learner someday, but here is something I dug up from when we ( Mime - who used to post sometimes here - and I ) were like 18 maybe ( 6 years ago )?

http://www.planetannihilation.com/tauec/pwd.htm

I reckon mime did the best design, but I m quit proud of the dreadnought :p at that time anyway it was more about reverse engineering than art haha

Cool stuff everyone, almost miss this thread.
spooge>> yeah me wants to see the sketch too
mon>> cool, being able to draw like this with 14 you deserved any prize
beat>> those comics are amazing, reminds me of some french old school comic masters. Would be great to see more
spyro>> same situation here, sigh...

Not my first drawing ever, yet not too far from that. My mom said I could draw better back then, I think she's right.

I did this for my portfolio for applying to the art academy 8 years ago...it's weird that I actually was applying to an interior design course, can't remember why I put up stuff like this.

This was my first try on a digital painting a few years back, done in ms paint and with a mouse, wasn't much fun...anyway, here ya go.

OK, here you go. It looks better in person, really. Cool

Certainly my color is more complex now, but this is better in terms of just getting the paint to do what i wanted.
