Hi !
Very Long time without posting anything.
Media: Watercolor pencil in canson paper. Size: A3
My very first one with color pencils
About 49 hours of work (not continuous) It was the first, so, a lot of testing was involved.
Some problems that I have noticed:
1) She looks a bit masculine. The model in the reference picture has a very proeminant jaw... I have exagerated a little
2) The colors seems weird. I think the scanner has reflected a lot of light. The original looks more blended and the colors are more vivid. I will gona try to digital photograph instead of scanning.
So... here it comes
Please, comment... I need help, this is my first painting with watercolor pencils.
Bye!
ps. I have posted this work in GFXartist too. |

FINE!!!
Tonho
This is truly awesome
The jaw/chin are to broad. I think shading the end darker would help alot to make it more female. It stands out to much.
And to make the bottompart of the face abit more round overall.
The lips are very important when paiting face portraits imho.
The colouring and the use of watercolor pencils are amazing.
I made a quick overpaint to illustrate what i think could have been done slightly better to make the picture even more appealing then it already is.
Great work!!!

Hmm cool. I've done color pencil rendering before. Requires a lot of patience I know. Don't have much more to add then what allpetter already said.
I would say you need to study up on facial proportions. Try to download one of Andrew loomis books and learn your proportions even if you are going to use a reference.
The reason why she looks like a man is that the mouth area and the forehead area is way too stretched compared to her nose. They should be about the same. And the lips should be a little smaller and upwards more. Again if you take a look at the book it will reveal instantly where you made a mistake. There are others like her jaw being way too wide and way too prominent facial features.
First time in color pencil huh? It's good. It's not exactly an easy medium to use .
Keep on painting! try to adjust the proportions digitally first so you can see what we mean instantly. |

Hey! Thanks allpetter! I understand your point! But I'm affraid to destroy a 40+ hour work. So... I will start a new one making this and some more modifications. That way a train a little bit
skullmonkeys thanx! I have some of the Loomis books. But this one I got a bit confused with the proportions because I was using a picture as reference, and this pictures is VERY small in size, taken from a note in a magazine. So the sketch was a little hard to make.
The ref. picture:
And yes.. I know she isn't redhaired... but... I love redheads heeheheh
Thanks for the comments. |
