So here I am working on coloring this sketch, but I am having trouble finding a method to paint metal that looks good. Any suggestions on technique? Overpaints welcome. Thanks in advance.

hm i tried a paintover just for fun... you probably want shiny clean metal to go with her look? so... it should reflect surrounding values/colors (with a little less intensity), and the values contrast sharply considering there's not much surface texture to spread the light around the surface... that's just what i was thinking about...

I think it's a "her".
The figure is done in a (very nice) stylized manner, and the technique for the metal areas should not be over rendered or too realistic.
Aphelionart's very fine work should be more muted in keeping with the figure's style. |

I really like how the overpaint came out. I am not sure what techniques you used to come up with that result though. Any tips? |

yea, i agree stacy.. too realistic, but i hope it helps explain the physics
basically, i lassoed the metal parts, then with a brush i alt+clicked surrounding objects (her hair, glove, other values from the metal), and focused on building reflections, then on lighting ... um, imagine each "plane" (even spheres can be broken into planes) of metal as a mirror.. reflecting the light source and nearby objects... u gotta imagine all the forms in a 3d space and try to figure out what you would see reflected depending on the angles of the planes. you can probably do a better job than i did because you know where the light source was for the rest of the figure. also, perhaps i made the metal too reflective (instead of just alt+clicking, maybe try tweaking the reflected materials first a bit so they're not so saturated and conform a little more value-wise to the metallic forms).
also, there's spooge's page on reflective material in the discussion forum:
