I'm looking to pick up a mobile PC to replace my desktop. I'm interested in the alienware machines or the Sony Vaio. I really like the color and crispness of the vaio screens, but I'm not sure about the reflectivness...i really like the deep blacks you get though. Anyone have experience with the Sonys? I have no idea about the alienware machine. Any takers on that one?
Any input and shared experiences would be appreciated. I'm mostly looking for the biggest screen with the highest resolution

Are you looking for a small lightweight mobil machine? Does it have to look stylish? Or all do you want is a long battery and a good monitor?
In all honesty I don't think the Sony Vaio is really worth the money.. you are really just paying for the name and look...
If you want a similar type product to the Vaio go for the IBM x40 or x50.. you will be getting a far superior machine for your buck..
But one downside to the VAIO and IBM is the monitor.. you get a smaller monitor which means less resolution.. they also only use TFT XGA monitors which aren't that great for painting on.. You want SXGA or WXGA...
My recomendation is the Acer 660.. its a great little computer.. weighs a little more.. but is sleak, looks good, and has everything you would want as a portable and at home computer..

As far as Alienware systems.. they are great.. but you really are paying for someone to build you a machine with them.. and you are actually paying for warranty.. which can be a good thing when you buy a laptop.. They arent like your regular box where you can modify and upgrade on a whim.
A good comparison to ALIEN systems is BOXX.. I like there big behemoth laptop.. more like tabletop...

I think its biggest downside is the battery life.. you need to buy a couple batteries if you are going to leave a wall socket for anything over 2 hours...
Anyhow.. good luck..
But key points
you want a SXGA or WSXGA monitor not TFT, TFTXGA, or XGA...

All of my personal work done for the last 2 years was done on a Sony Vaio laptop with a 16.1 inch screen, 512mb. It works really great, the contrast and colors look amazing. If you need a fast machine (and necessarily a laptop) I highly recommend this one. The only issue is when you save images and watch them on other screens, they tend to look dark because of the LCD screens contrast/brightness. It's only minor though and I wouldn't let that stop you. _________________ http://www.somniostudios.com |

Death Jester- I'm looking for a power machine; Hyperthreaded, 2gigs of RAM and as big as a screen as I can get. I'll be doing illustration as well as movie and 3D stuff. Battery life doesn't totally concern me, though it'd be nice to have infinite battery life.
I'm not the biggest fan of LCD. When I compare the sony screen to other screens they all look 'mattey' in comparision.
Boxxtech seemed to be the same machine that alienware was offering and at a similar price. I'm still curious about they're screen. _________________ www.vancekovacs.com |

If your not concerned about battery life then you probably don't plan to work mobile. In that case consider the option of attaching a normal CTR monitor to your notebook. That is then still a bit better than the Vaio screens and the display of the notebook is one thing less you have to care about when you look for a notebook to buy.
I also would recommend a Centrino cpu. Quite, cool and battery lasts for quite a while. |
