Hello,

I am back from freezing my ass off in Illinois and it was such a nice day I decided to take my laptop out and try something I have always wanted to try- location sketching with photoshop.

It really does work. It is better than paint if you want to capture effects of light that are transient. It is fast and adjustable. Get an umbrella to diffuse the light off your screen. Laptops are not bright enough yet.

Have fun

Hope that works

Yeah, not bad for 'sketch'... i see only one trouble - it's too big for my screen.

You DID use a mouse, right? Because if you used one of those stubs or pads that laptops are usually controlled with I'll be forced to deem you insane.

tablet plugged into the usb perhaps? You'd need a lotta lap really, wouldn't you. Or, if one isn't a huge hotkey fanatic, rig up some way to put the tablet over the keyboard.

I dunno. cool pic anyway, even though it is a bit hard to "get" with the scrolling necessary to view it

That is a pretty good lookin' pic! Hmm ... I wonder what it would look like shrunken down a bit?

But really, how did you draw that? Laptop touch-pad, laptop-stub, attatched mouse, or graphics tablet? I'd really like to know!

Cya.

Makes me wonder what resolution you drew this in and what kind of laptop you're running

I like that style a lot. But what is the name for it? I can't remember.

My art teacher would die if I could paint something like that. She's supposedly a world reknown watercolor artist.

I downloaded it and resized it. This is amazing, you did this in Photo Shop and not Painter? It's fucking amazing, I love it.

Yes, I have an i-book with a USB tablet. Trying to paint with the microscopic finger-thingy would make you insane.

I painted it at the rez you see it, and I suppose you do have to DL it and open it in a scalable way to have it make any sense. I really feel strongly about painting and viewing at the higher than screen rez.

No, the house is not on fire There were some red plants on the roof edge.

That bright area is my driveway

I had a guy try and sell me a "finger-thingy" when I asked for a Wacom at a department store once. funny funny stuff.

hey isn't the i-book transparent in places? doesn't that get a bit annoying?

Spooge: Just wondering what size/opacity brush you use to do the loose freehand sketching? I like the way it flows and seems almost liquid.

How big is your laptop's screen?
That is amazing %^&*, although I'm not surprized at all, knowing it's coming from you...

It would be cool if you made an in-depth tutorial, kinda like what Dhabih has, explaining how you use your masks and channels, with step by step progress pics. Unless it's a secret or something...

I love your work, man! Keep it up.

Yes, the i-book is translucent in places, but I can't imagine why that would bother anyone. I have the Fischer Price G3 and I feel it's a little cheap looking...

Oh, Muzman, I like your skull. Mind if I try it?

I use the pen (finally) for the loose stuff, so the opacity goes up and down. I try to think of it as thin glazes of acrylic paint. It gives variations of color and value.

The texture above is really straight painting, with a little color dodge thrown in on top- nothing special. If you were to splatter some ink on a board and scan it, good luck trying to duplicate it. But I think this misses the point that if the basics are right, the texture does not matter much. More basics, less technique

This pic has no masks or layers, there wasn't time. Maybe I will do another one and take screen shots at 5 min intervals and zip them all together, if there is interest.

Ps. I am updating my site, goodbrush, tonight with a few new paintings and some concept work done a while ago for Dreamworks El Dorado. Next month I will post some really hideous mattes for Bicentennial man
