It'll kick ass, no doubt, but it's in another country which rules it out for a lot of people.

thats 400 if you dont count getting there and having a place to sleep. i would be curious to see it, but not enough to lay out that type of cash. plus big names arent always good instructors. personally i'm waiting to see what type of feedback people give the instructors and the workshops before investing that type of money.

From what I heard about the European workshop, it was a very valuable learning experience for all who attended. So, I'm basing my expectations for the American workshop on that. Plus, the stateside workshop is supposed to be much, much larger than the Euro one.

I'm really excited to meet all the artist attending and learn as much as I can from them. I also live in Arizona, so my traveling cost are pretty low to Texas, making it easier for me to go. I still understand it might be to costly for some folks to go based on where they live and what-not. I do consider myself very fortunate to be able to go, especially since I never had the option of attending an art school or anything like that.

$400
+ Hotel
+ food
+ travel
= Shocked too expensive

I hope the workshop goes over well, but it's not going to work for me. But having the names is always a boon to have for later reference. Who knows, someone might even go so far as to share videos of what went down with folks to coax people to actually consider attending the follow-up workshops.

i'm definitely going.. i got an email today adding that "companies with professionals to attend (not including the instructors) the event include Microsoft, EA, Sony, Bioware, Northrop Grumman, Nintendo, Outlaw Studios, Acclaim, Activision, Massive Black Inc, and many more...." and the G4/Tech TV Network will be covering it. I was surprised it didn't spark much of a commotion here as well, seeing how these aren't just talented artists but *experience* artists who're also doing portfolio reviews as well as giving advice about the business in general, i think. it definitely is expensive, but for me, this 4-day workshop will be more meaningful towards my future/career than at least a semester in college! i sure do hope some fellow sijuners gon' show up at this here ho-down in texas. giddyup?!

Wink The vibe of enthusiasm for this is great, but for alot of us it's just too expensive right now. I hope it goes well, and I'll try to remember to plan out my vacation to include time for this next year, but right now, it's a negatory.

Much as I would like to go to Austin, Texas, it's not practical for me. If it were in LA, maybe...

Even if I had left the first day, it would have been worth what I paid. As it is, I feel as though I've somehow ripped off Jason Manley, Android, el coro, et al. If anything like this ever happens again, consider yourselves lucky you got a second chance and GO.

I have NEVER in my life been around a more amazing, giving, creative, and inspired group of people. Even the figure models were great. It was hot as hell due to a heatwave and air conditioners going down...had to buy like five more just to cool it down...but it didnt matter, the instructors did better than ANY I ever experienced in college or my pro career. Here are some pics.... http://www.conceptart.org/austin the rest are over on ca...and more to come when you see where funding went for ca next week. woot! PS seburo you cynic...dont miss this stuff man...it is so up your alley that you would even be able to not want to strangle me! I have never worked or learned with more giving instructors. You would have to see it to believe it. Good thing we filmed 20 hours or more of footage (the camera man directed shots on the matrix films and his associate just happened to be a supervisor for vfx on shrek 2)...we will have some good stuff to show you all as soon as it is all edited down to a viewable form for the web. got that seb? hehehe...I rhymed! It would have been good to meet you man. I hope you can make the next one. There were a couple dozen or more studios represented including ID, Ensemble, Valve, Bioware, Massive Black, Acclaim, Reel FX, Blur, Escape, Tippett, flagship studios and the rest of the studios the instructors were a part of...the list is long. We gave a hundred and fifty bucks worth of gnomon dvd's to everyone too..even a copy of painter to the luck of the draw. People got their moneys worth. I spent a wad out of my own pocket and it was worth every penny. J

that type of money??/ hmm...four hundred tuition...hotel sixty dollars (fifteen a night at laquinta with everyone else)...food eighty bucks...drinks and fun for less than fifty bucks..yeah we had a live band..rather two live bands and a fire dancer...cab fare seventy bucks or less...airfare two hundred fifty... all in all it was probably around nine hundred=fifty each for the budget conscious....take home a hundred and fifty in dvd's and that brings the investment to about seven fifty to eight hundred bucks....hell, you spent that much for ONE credit hour at art center...I bet you spend that much on going out to eat every month in LA. Go over and ask if it was worth the cash on CA and see what people say. I paid to do it too...and as i said..it was totally worth it. J

yea i just wanna say thanks jason, i didn't get a chance to pull you aside and thank you personally while i was there (mostly lurking around)... but thanks. it was eye-opening and pretty much filled in all my questions/concerns about where i want to go and now i've got a much stronger direction for what i want to do and what i have to do to get there... i hope you guys continue doing this, because it was worth every cent and more!

haha. i actually have a frugal enough life and try not to spend too much plus work keeps me busy enough. i have seen most of the gnomon dvds since i have been lucky enough to borrow them and most of my art center education was subsidized by the state and federal government. i regret not going to meet some people and to see a few of them work, but it was more of a curiousity type of thing, you know? like i really regret not being able to meet sparth(and see him work), but i assume that there will be future opportunities. like i missed the chance to meet adi granov when he was in la a few years ago, but i will have the chance to meet up with him next month. plus i knew a few people that attended who would give me the lowdown and it is not a good time to take days off at work. i told davi most of my thoughts on the workshop so if he hasnt told you, i'm sure you could get them from him.

I will say it again...if this is yer angle on your career, these events shouldnt be missed. this is not the gnomon dvd reality show...it is something entirely different. I think the next one is going to be in sydney australia so it will be tough for the american crowd to make it....we shall see. we are planning a cali event as well...but it wont be til next year at least.....we only want to do these yearly as I have to give up all my freelance to make them happen. that is a huge hit to lose three months of work...so if we can do it yearly, we will be fortunate. i onyl mentioned the dvds, because i believe you included it as part of the incentive to go. i think these workshops are a cool idea but its a tad bit too much money for me. i'll stick to the free/cheaper ones until the circus comes to town.

Any chances of this workshop showing up someplace even remotely close to the East Coast of the US, otherwise I can't attend it. Cali, Texas, and Amsterdam are too far for me to travel right now. How about letting us know when it hits someplace between NYC and Virginia?
