Anyone know a way to get the colourpicker to always be open (/floating)?
(Instead of opening it every time I want a colour not on the canvas)

A plugin or something?

Edit
*Post deleted. I misread your post, sorry! Sad *

Would the Color palette be of any help to you? You can have it floating and pick colors using the sliders or clicking on the mini color wheel under it.

I'm extremely bad with sliders, and I need more precision than the colourbar beneath it. The colourpicker in PS is excellent, so I use it all the time.. and that's why I would really like to be able to have it up at all times. <:/

This is interesting... Having used Photoshop for more than 10 years, I'm not sure what you mean by the color picker? How do you bring it up on screen?

hey guys

At first I thought you meant the eye-dropper but then I realized that the color selection is the color picker.
I think the closest u can come to having some sort of a color choosing is to have the color window opened, not sure if it is possible to have the color picker opened all the time but it would be great though as u said.
Maybe the cs version can have the color picker opened, anyone who knows?

eyewoo : The colour picker is opened by clicking the current colour in the toolbar.

Matthew : I was just gonna ask about cs actually :)

It sure helps alot to have it open all the time, especially when you're looking for a colour and only need to make small adjustments. I've come to work in paintchat more often than PS just because of this function. (the more recent versions of pchat uses a colourpicker very close to the ps one.)

It won't minimize, maximize, or stay open in CS as far as I can tell. And I saw a feature request recently posted in the Adobe Forum asking to be able to have it stay as a floating palette.

ah-ha... that's called the color-picker... Got it... 'cause the online manual refers to the color-picker as being the option to choose between Adobe or Windows colors... I got a little confused... happens with advanced age... Smile

I just use the HSB sliders. It's frustrating to click the color swatch on the toolbar. Wink

I think the L-a-b sliders can be useful for painters, too.

"L" is good for playing with values of the same hue, and "a" and "b" are usually pretty good for warming and cooling the hue.

No one ever uses them, but if you think of them, check them out once in a while.

Here's an idea:

http://eatpoo.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=23957

Have you seen that? He suggests keeping a document open with an image of a color wheel.

Oh! I never thought of changing the sliders, thanks for the tip guys. (Or well, I did know you could I guess, but when I initially learned it I was young and had no idea such things as "value" and "saturation" existed. I mostly wondered where the hell red and green went.) It doesn't replace the picker though, but thanks for the reminder. :) It might help a little.

I have to admit that just looking at those colourwheels make me all dizzy. Great solution though, much swifter than any of my similar attempts. Even so, I need the simplicity of the b*s*d (or similar) colourpicker diagram thing and it's enchanting hueslider ... Mostly because my simple brain needs the simple layout. Thanks though, I might try them out while waiting for the picker.

Hopefully the adobe people listens to the person who wanted it floating..

hmm yes the LAB sliders indeed are useful. I recommend all you people to
give it a go.

Is there a way to have 2 color windows open so I can have both HSB and
LAB sliders at the same time?

I have the colour palette set to HSB in the 'toolbar dock/well' thing where you can drop palettes at the top right. That way after I hide all them palettes with tab to clear space I can just have the toolbar at the top and pick colours quickly and easily. that works just perfect for me.

This was discussed in a thread when CS came out. I among others complained about how the new custom keyboard shortcut function sucks because it wouldn't let you add a shortcut to the color picker dialog. The only way to open it is to click fore- or background color swatch. But someone (who I can't remember the name of, sorry) suggested using a program such as EZ Macros to record the mouse clicking on it and then connect that to a key. I haven't tried it myself, but as far as I know it should work. Though it won't let you have it floating open like the other palettes in PS.

Capt. Fred: ever tried pressing F6? It shows/hides the color palette. Very usefull when painting full-screen with everything hidden.
