I am new to digital art, and am new to traditional art as well.
I do however know what a pencil "feels" like when I use it on a piece of paper. I couldn't get painter to react like a pencil would on paper (it kept either not putting anything down when I pressed light, but hard enough to make a mark if it were on paper -- or -- made it completely solid when I didn't press that hard).
Naturally I started fooling around with all settings, and now I can't get it back to normal in Painter.
I reverted my wacom settings back to normal though.
Can someone share their Painter pressure settings with me (in the brush tracking area)? Perhaps even share their wacom settings (because mine never felt great to begin with).
If it helps any, I consider myself to have a light touch.
Edit:
Using Painter 8.1 and an Intuos2 (latest drivers). Figured this info might help. |

I don't know how to revert painter settings back to default, but after doing so I recommend you trying to fasten a paper over your wacom. Many people new to digital art (/tablets) find the tablet to "slippery" and have a hard time controlling their strokes.
With a paper on it you get a natural paper resistance when drawing (and painting), however it might wear the nib down faster so don't forget to change it if it becomes too short. (You should have more nibs in the tablet box. Remember to have a medium-light setting so you don't have to push hard through the paper, as it both scratches the paper and wears the nib down faster.)
(After a while you will probably want to dump the paper and go on without it, as it's not a good solution for working fast. Or maybe you will use it when drawing before painting, or at 6am in the morning before your fingers have properly woken up.)
As for the painter setting issue, I wouldn't be suprised if you can find it in some FAQ, probably at their website. (If no one here knows the answer) |

To return a single brush variant to its default settings:
In Painter 8, choose Restore Default Variant from the Brush Selector menu.
In Painter 6 and Painter 7, choose Restore Default Variant from the Brushes palette's Variant menu.
To restore all brush variants in the currently loaded brush library to their default settings, hold down the Alt/Option key and:
In Painter 8, choose Restore All Default Variants from the Brush Selector menu, then click the OK button.
In Painter 6 and Painter 7, choose Restore Default Variant from the Brushes palette's Variant menu, then click the OK button.

This setting brings Painter 8 close to Painter 7's pressure default. It's not perfect, but it's close enough. Tweak to taste. Brush behaviors change radically when you mess with these settings, so go slowly.

Thanks for the replies everyone.
drunken_muse,
Actually I prefer the feel of the tablet vs paper. With less resistance and a light touch, it feels like the pen just glides across the tablet effortlessly. I just couldn't get the pressure settings right digitally.
Jin,
Not really what I was looking for, but thanks for the tip. It will definitely come in handy as I have a bad habit of changing stuff around without making backups of existing settings heh.
Pat,
Thanks. I never used painter 7, but your settings feel very good. It picks up the lightest lights and allows you to hit the very darks without digging the nib into the tablet -- exactly what I was looking for.
These settings mixed with the default wacom settings (in control panel) appear to be a perfect match. Perhaps when I get more experienced, I will tweak them a bit. For now though, I'm 100% satisfied. |
