there is very little sense of depth here.
it's mostly because the colours and contrast of the trees in the distance are the same as the ones in the foreground. in reality atmospheric effects (haze, fog, air, etc) will create differing colours depending on the distance.
ehm... i hope i'm understandable hehe...
great detail, but don't lose yourself in it. |

I think the photoshop specialty brush was way over-used here. The bird is just a bunch of lines, little care was taken. Digital painting is not about instant art, it takes a lot of time and patience. |

You used the leaf brush waaay to many times, you should cut back on this evil habit. Never cut corners, it will only make things worse. |

mm i think one of my personal problems is i don't take enough advantage of different brushes, like u see in spooge demon's work. garreta, maybe you could just try using more abstract brushes... they don't even necessarily have to relate to your subject, but can be used for a variety of textural effects. i can see the benefit of the leaves as a brush in the background/shadow to save time, but then maybe draw in some leaves in the foreground/light?
and kinda like radiance said.. think about saturation. to me, using completely saturated colors vs gray is like using white and black... very sparingly and then it becomes a very powerful tool at your disposal.
and, for some reason that heaven sign looks real ominous w/red letters.. should it? hehe
then maybe the forest could start out shimmery but towards the horizon get dark and spooky to extend the idea. ok, hope any of this helps..

Sorry man, slow to reply. But I'm afraid the biggest problem is not "taking advantage of other brushes" It's a problem with your drawing skill, first and foremost, and the absolute lack of diverse values in the piece. Go to artrenewal.org to find a listing of the best art schools in the world.
