Well if they post it and ask what you think generally paople don't just say it totally suxs. They point out things which they could improve but hey half the time they might like it how it actually is

Ooh, I know that theory well... I'm a member of this org. that arranges these week-long 'camps' (There has to be a better word for this.. Anyone?) for 14-15 year olds. The idea is to get them to talk about different things, basically to get them to think about the meaning of life, if you will. Form opinions of their own and to learn about what others believe and why. So anyhow, every year before the 'camps' (erg) begin there are a few training session, and in order to get the teams who are responsible for each 'camp' to function well, we've been told of different ways of giving feedback etc. I'll just elaborate on the sandwich theory a bit:
The idea is that when you give feedback, you should start with something positive, and then say what you think could be improved , and end with something positive. That way whoever's getting the feedback doesn't feel like you've been too harsh.
While it's true that people need to be able to take feedback, good or bad, it's much more effective this way.

I agree with you laminator .. this Forum should mainly be used . to inspire people to get better, .. at least that is what I get out of it .. We are all artists here .. we shouldn't put people down .. we should be like a team .. who knows maybe someday we will be working together ..

Hi everyone....
I've been reading posts here for a couple months now, the work has been very inspiring. I got my wacom tablet a month ago and have yet to post. I really not sure if I want to because of some of the harsh feedback people have been giving. I find art to be a very personal thing; to put so much time and energy into something and then have someone put it down in one sentence ain't fun. If you are going to post, post to help the person, not to just say you don't like it.
Here's something I learned in school the past year, "The Criticism Sandwitch". Yes, I know it sounds dumb, I thought it was quite funny as well when I first heard it. You state something you like and then you use the word "and" (not "but") and follow it up with something you think could be better.
eg. I really like the pose of your character and if you defined the muscles more I think it would make the picture even better!
I can't belive I'm reciting that advice. But I think the level of feedback needs definate improvement.
Happy New Year etc.

Or everyone could just not be so damn sensitive. :P
I think it's important to give encouragement, but don't sugarcoat it. Just be honest.

I really agree with Laminator and Affected. I've tried to talk about this in other posts, but nobody really listens to me. I agree also that people need to be honest, but it can be said in better ways than what is often used here. "everybody's a critic" will forever be true. Art is very personal, and it takes guts to post it here. It's like a look into someone's mind or soul. People shouldn't trash that. People don't start out as master artists, especially using the digital media. Most of us started out with crayons before we got to the oils and pastels. Besides... I still like crayons. |
