"preliminary"?

Looks done matey. It passes the squint-test. But some more detailed noodling certainly wouldn't go amiss. Not too keen on the light blurring effect, is the viewer meant to be moving at some speed?

looks lovely pud, one bit confuses me a little though, the area to the left in the foreground, looks like it's elevated, tipping to the right, it's the intention i'm confused about, as it looks good as is, but i reckon either making it more prominent, or flattening back down would help (i get the feeling you were trying to curve the perspective rather than have it all horizontal, single point, but i'm probably wrong) in any case it's pretty damn nifty

Hey pudding, this is nice.
I was thinking about reflections in the water, or maybe some more defined shadow areas. But I don't know if it would ruin it.
I like the way you've painted the background rough- it works very well.

Awesome work Pudding!!!
Alot of atmosphere and a great perspective. I also like the colors.
Not sure about the motion blur effect that ceenda mentioned too.
AT least if you wanna use it you have to add after the detiled version of the city. AT some parts it's hard to tell where a building starts/ends. Yeah, just because of the lack of detail. But the main impression is wonderful which is the most important thing about mattes.
By the way, are you going to use it in an animation?
If not it can't be a mattepainting Very Happy Just a painting in mattepainting style like I call it all the time hehehe...anyway...I don't make sense hehe.
Keep it up buddy!!

The reflection of the sky on the water and the sky itself does not match and it's affecting the overall harmony of the image.

I'd keep the reflections on the water and change the color of the sky to match the water.

It feels like it's early morning. [which is good] If so, there needs to be some edge highlights on the buildings. Prolly a bit saturated orangy yellow color.

other than that the painting looks awesome! Keep up the good work!

i think that the light bluring effect for the carlights is good, and i think it makes it look more futuristic. isn't that the effect you get when you overexpose the film in a camera? I don't know anything about photgraphy Rolling Eyes .

but i don't think the city itself looks very futuristic, try making it more futuristic.

VERY nice Summer Pudding!

Top notch perspective work.
Great lighting!

The water really needs to have em shadows from the bridges though! Wink

Thr3ddy: thanks a million. Blade Runner, and Syd Mead's art for that film were a major influence. He made dystopia look so good imo.

ceenda: thanks mate. You're right. I get so keen to move on to the next piece, that detail is often overlooked. The blurring effect was originaly meant to be a subtle glow. Got a bit carried away with it. The POV is meant to be stationary btw.

ax--hv: cheers buddy. Coming from a lighting master, that means a lot.

spyroteknik: nice one spyro, glad you like it. Yes, the area in the bottom left is meant to break up the simple perspective of the main bridge. I think you're referring to the small bridge over the underpass?

Pringle: thanks man. The lack of reflection was a glaring oversight on my part. I meant to put them there, but forgot. Lame, but true. Maybe I won't be so hasty next time.

tsunami: don't hold your breath Very Happy

Max Kulich: cheers Max. It was your post that triggered my most recent Blade Runner fixation, which in turn lead to this. When I get round to starting it, the painting 'in the matte painting style' Shocked won't be for an animation. I just like the idea of tackling something really difficult. As for the detail, in an earlier version, the buildings looked too distinct from one another. In this version, I've tried to break that up a bit.

skullmonkeys: I know! I know!! I KNOW!!! Wink

Wagner: thanks man. I've no idea either. Sounds plausible.

The Insane Lemur: cheers Lemur. Glad you liked it.

allpeter: thanks! I'm not sure what I've learned from this picture, but it was fun to paint.

Back to that Triceratops texture. See y'all soon

I don't post much, more of a lurker. but i love "future city" stuff.
everything looks PERFECT... except one thing..
suggestion: i'd imagine in the future there would be a lot more sky scrapers...

i like how you can see the vast land scape, perhaps it should be looking towards the center of the city, so in the horizon perhaps have a buncha clustered tall buildings, as if the city got more and more busy, and clustered as you head towards the heart of the city.

just a suggestion Wink

The problem here is that you mixed different mood. The top looks more like cool morning while bottom lost in dark, warm reds and yellow tones. Let me show you the possible ways:

Evening time, lot’s of warm colors, glows and shadows.

Morning time, cool colors.

Haven’t spent much time on these, so sorry for the mess. I hope you can get an idea.

Considering painting process, first off, get some reference. Next, start from big simple shapes, paint in layers if needed. In the very beginning you have to catch proper lighting, mood and color of your scene. After you’ve blocked the scene you can slap some texture over it (rusted metal, grass, paper, photos… just anything that will add an interest and variations to your drawing). Pay attention to edges. And finally, have fun. Smile

Leo: Sir, yes sir!! Smile Oh man, well, I guess I've had it coming for a while. I must admit, your interpretation is a great improvement. Especially the morning scene. The night scene is really vibrant too, there is so much more life in it, and those reflections are excellent. Thanks for taking the time to paint these, and thanks for the advice. Have you done matte paintings before? Cool

Bravo

frantic: thanks man!

Ulic Qel-Droma: I was thinking the exact same thing, the whole time.
