Hello you guys!
I started working on a selfportrait in photoshop yesterday and I'm not so sure how to go on now... Should I smooth it all out or leave it in this kind of style? All I know is just that it's not yet finished, but how to go on...?
I'd really appreciate some c&c, thanks

Beautiful portrait! I suggest that you do a couple of different quick versions of the pic and then judge yourself what looks the most what you want and continue it. I don't think you should listen to any other peoples opinions about how to draw your picture. But hey, this is only my opinion, ofcourse you do whatever you like. |

Wow, the coolness of this portrait makes it really appealing. I actually like the effect the photoshop strokes give it, so I would vote for keeping it. I agree with SolarC, though--you should do what you want. |

Personally, there is so much going on there, and the line quality gives it such a strength and energy, that I would keep it in the current painterly style. However, I think you should finish it as a whole, realizing that the background needs to have the same energy that the figure has, and with about the same line variation.
And I'd also like to see the right side of the figure and the picture finished.

Thanks you guys for all your c&c! I've been away last week and didn't have any internet access but I kept working on it anyway, although without having seen any of your suggestions...
Well here it is. I'm not entirely happy with it as I think it has lost "something" from the earlier version to now, although I'm not quite sure what. I think I'll leave it like this and do another overpainting from the ealier version I've posted here, trying to go in another direction - or what do you think...?

hey Yanka.
Wow this port has a lot of energy in it and I found it to be very cool, especially that first rough one above. Be careful with eyes and the shading in them, also, the iris size in the eye is something that can be difficult to get right aswell.
I played around with the composition and maybe a composition like this would work out better for you, what u think?
I hope it helps.
keep it up.

I love the final version so very nice, and you are beautiful.
And a question for me lol, how do you turn it smooth from when you get to the part when it is, rough??
I can never get passed that part to smooth it out. _________________ When you look at a blank canvas or drawing paper, it stares you in the eyes and thinks it can beat you.~ Justin Beckett |

i know this is somewhat old but i'll reply anyway.
you lost certain little touches with the more finished version. like the subtle smile in the first. i would also watch your edges... specially on lips - blend them in to the skin. they dont have the hard edge unless the makeup is on.
color wise, everything went a little dark with the finished version. face lost a lot of the light. maybe that was the intention, but the planes are not as defined anymore so it looks flatter.
put in corners of the mouth, even if you dont think you have them. they are just little round dimples that add a lot.
othweise this is really good. i love your eyes. |
