The foreground silouette was 3D it was done by my friend in the class. I filled it with black so I could concentrate on the background.

very interesting wip sketch. I made an overpaint to show you how u could start making things pop out from the shadows, also changed the composition a bit.
In your sketch the sun was from several directions when looking at the clouds, but, I choosed low sun from the left.
Mine is not perfect in any way but I felt I had to scribble on it, hope it helped a little bit. If not feel free to beat me up after this.

Yeah, the sun is coming from different places at once. Thanks for pointing that out.
I get carried away a lot when Im painting. I have to work on that.
Thanks also for getting me started on the forms on the foreground elements. The detail on the water could use more contrast tho. |

I quite liked the basic forms left by the sillouhettes, and offer my alternative paintover for your consumption
