scroll down to see new version. thx

-----------------------------------

Hey guys!

Here's something I made some weeks ago.
I wasn't even sure if I should post it.

My plan was something like: a futuristic city in Mattepainting style...
I didn't suceed
I messed everything up, lost in detail.
I stopped after several hours of work.
I think I have to sharpen my skills some more for such kind of stuff.

The only thing I am happy with is the composition...hmm...well
Hope some of you will like it anyway. At least I learned alot and that is what everything's about. it was worth it

Here's a 50% detailshot for those who are interested

By the way, I was inspired by a speedpainting I posted some time ago. I just Painted over it.
I think I like the speedpainting version better.

Comments are very welcome!!!
Thanks for viewing

It's cool, but the whole image is just too "gray", I think you should use other colors also but just blue and yellow.

I prefer the speedpainting version too, this one seems a bit overloaded with details as you said yourself, BUT man you earn my respect, youre getting really really good.

Yes, thats a great picture! Its allways nice to study details in pictures. This pic doesnt dissapoint me in that matter. Smile

Oh, and the title is sooooo cool! I wonder what it would like to live in there. And the other people in there? Hmm....

I like the speedpaint much better. The thing is that it has much more atmosphere. The new one is detail laden, but the lack of distance like in the other one really hampers it. Maybe just do a direct paint over your speedpaint and put detail into that one as it is.

Like the detail on this one though. Really amazing.

Petri.J: thanks! I am a big fan of cold color shemes. And I don't like oversaturated images. You could be right anyway, maybe some warm colors could give this painting more life.

gLitterbug: Hey! Thank you very much!! Yeah, there's just too much detail, or it's wrong placed. I am glad you replied - thanks again Razz

Matthew: Hehe,...Thanks alot!!! Well, I still have alot of practise time...maybe Laughing

noxi: I am glad you like it! Thank you!!! Yes, living in such a city would be cool. Maybe in a hundred years its possible.....

Aikomb: Thank you!!!

XIA: Thanks!!! I really apprechiate it! Sorry, I don't have any "real" progress steps of the city but I found some of the speedpainting: speedpainting steps

dfacto: Yeah, you are right. The dark atmosphere got lost...And the buildings aren't in perspective - so there is no real depth.
Thank you very much! Laughing

Ironically I think the speeed painting is better because the composition is better. In the new picture the composition suggests the city is symmetrical (though it is obviously not), making the overall effect less visually striking.

Having said that it is still an awesome picture. good work

wow it is nice anyway

how is about to defining the speedpainting version? add more contrast, details, more feeling of depth (sharpen and blur in some places)

it would be awesome!

It reminds me of viag's style. Stylish but too flat for a matte painting I guess.
The speed painting is perfect ... damn. Shocked

How about starting a kingdom/empire thread? I'd contribute.
And I think there were some people in the speed painting thread who want to practice cities.
They would probably fit. And many people already have some.

No crits from me btw. Just that they are stylish rather than realistic imho.
Rock on!

the background has depth. It's jut the foreground which is too flat.
Plus foreground perspective issues are helping to flatten it a little too.

Great pic, nice work, it could really work and it's not far off.

Like Viag's style?...hmm yeah, actually your right - because of the detail and sharpness I quess. A kingdom/empire thread would be nice thought!

Capt. Fred: yep, that's it. Maybe I'll try it with a blockmodeling next time Very Happy...
Thank you very much Fred!!!

Hi there!
Here is a little repaint of your image:

there are still TONS of things to do but hope you can get an idea:

paint simple. Don’t go nuts with details. Matte painting or even illustration is just an illusion, not actual reality. Concentrate on big shapes and values. Choose an appropriate color scheme but add slightly variations to avoid monotony. Experiment with lighting, mood. Look at work of real masters (Craig, Dusso etc.) - you will dig many ideas.

Leo: I am speechless....I feel so honoured! Thank you so much Leo!!!!!!
I still can't believe that you took the time to actually do a paintover for me.
You are one of my favourite artists.
I have been following all your stuff for quite a long time. Wonderful!!! Ah, sorry, I just had to say that.....
This paintover really helps me ALOT.
That really opened my eyes, I start to understand the importance of color and shapes.
I know exactly what you mean Leo, all of this makes sense.
There is so much "life" in the painting now...stunning
I'll take all of your advice into consideration as I start to work on a new one.
I'll keep that in my mind, for sure.
Thanks again Leo, you are just amazing!!!

see: I am very happy about your reply Very Happy Thank you very, very much!!!

Your last speedpainting was awesome between!!

Now I am relly motivated. Thanks again guys!!!
It's relly nice to get so many comments - I really appreciate it!!

You're getting better every day. It's a little detail heavy both in the foreground and background, so it looses some depth, but still very eye catching non the less.

Good stuff, keep it up. Smile

This is great work Max. I'm a sucker for dystopian futuristic cities.

I haven't read the whole thread, so I might be repeating the words of others.

If you're after the matte painting look, I'd bear in mind what spooge said on his site about too much detail blowing the illusion. To me, the background seems a bit too busy. Perhaps if you tighten up the foreground detail and make the background detail a bit more vague, you will achieve this.

Thanks alot pudding!!!
Yeah, I know. I actually knew that before, though it's harder to achieve than it sounds. I'll improve by trying again and again. I am struggling with alot of different subjects at the moment....well ya know.
Thanks once again for all the replies guys!!!!!
