Heya guys,

I consider myself a 'newbie' in the world of graphic arts. I recently, within the last seven months or so, have taken an interest in graphic design, and in particular, Photoshop. I'm working with Photoshop v.5.5 and I just love it. I've been drawing various anime and mecha pictures by hand in pencil for quite a while now and have never taken the initiative or the interest in adding colour to it. So, finally, I decided that I'd scan one of my drawings in and try to colour it in Photoshop. So, here is, the final product. This really is my first try at colouring anything in. I dont have a drawing tablet, this is done with a, mouse.

I've been looking over your drawings for inspiration for quite a while now, and I cant seem to make it look '3D'. Any and all tips/tutorials (heh heh) would be appreciated as this really is interesting to me.

Keep up the great work, and thanks in advance!

Well, you've laid down all the flat colours and done *some* shading. But to make it look more 3d, you should make more striking contrasts between shades. IE: Really dark colours in the reccesses and fade to lighter colours. Usually all the highlights will be on raised surfaces as they catch the light the most.
Using the dodge and burn tools on the 'highlight' setting will help give you strong contrasts, but sometimes it doesn't look right. But have a go with it anyway.

I hope this helped

Seems you need more work on it. Much MORE work, sorry. Just look around for great anime masters. Do you saw "Ghost in the Shell" art? No? Then go for it!
As for 3D, trust me, i saw only a few samples of amazing 3D art. Think, why you need 3D?

Thanks for the replies guys. I got the answers that I was expecting, more work heh heh.

Leo, as for why I wanted '3D', all I wanted was something more detailed that looked more life like. Thanks once again for your reply; I'll keep shading and working on it, and post back up here when I've made some progress.

Yeah, it's called life or like someone said -- non-stop action. So you keep practicing forever. I've looked at your site and found some great examples of traditional anime art... hehe you must be already SAW GITS .

Thanks Leo Here are some sketches I did a few years back. I'm working on colouring Goku_Flying in, but I think I'm going to start back on Michiko.

I really like her, I think she's adorable. You guys always have to remember that not everybody has the same style or uses the same technic (I can't spell tonight.. or ever) But yes, it may benifit from some more work, but I also think it's a very nice picture.

Hey RYan . for your first rendering that's good .. if you are going for anime look they use flat colors and contrasting shadows , not so much the textured color look .. but is good ..
