Does anyone know where I can find some good painter tutorials for a beginner? I just bought painter 8 student edition and apparently the student edition doesn't have a manual on it (that I can find on the 2 CD's anyway.. if someone knows there is one let me know!)

Having real hard time trying to find a tutorial that will introduce me to the basics of the program so if anyone has any good links it will be appreciated.

Theres meant to be some good ones on the TutorAlley forums but signups are locked and they cant be browsed if you're not a member Mad

Hi sixBlade,

Yep, there are some (a lot of) good tutorials at TutorAlley.

My apologies for a misleading signature, which I've edited to let everyone know that new registrations, and my Painter classes, are on hold due to a family medical emergency.

Hopefully, I'll be able to open things up again sometime in the near future.

In the meantime, I'll do what I can to help, time permitting.

First, you should have the Painter 8 User Guide accessible via Help > Help Topics. It'll open in your browser and on the left panel, you'll see three tabs:

Contents
Index
Search

Whatever content you choose, or search, will appear in the right panel.

It's the same as the hard copy Painter 8 User Guide.

A few tutorials are also available from inside Painter using Help > Tutorials. Again a page will open in your browser with links to various tutorials, both on your hard drive and online at the Corel site.

OOPS! Corel has moved the tutorials so that won't work for any tutorials that are not on your hard drive, installed with Painter 8. For those that are located on the Corel site, go to:

Corel Painter 8 - Tutorials

Be sure to download the tutorials located on the Corel site soon as they'll probably be unavailable after Painter 9 is released. At least that's what Corel did with Painter 7 tutorials when Painter 8 was released.

If you don't already have the Painter 8.1 patch included in your newly purchased Painter 8 software, it's downloadable, along with the updated Painter 8 User Guide in PDF format at:

ftp://ftp.corel.com/pub/Painter/8.1

Use all of the following steps when Uninstalling Painter 8, reinstalling Painter 8, and installing the Painter 8.1 patch:

1. Close Painter 8 and other programs.

2. Move any files you created into a new backup folder outside of the Painter 8 folders.

3. Uninstall Painter 8.

4. Manually delete any remaining Painter 8 folders and files.

5. Reboot.

6. Install Painter 8 and don't open it even one time.

7. Install the Painter 8.1 patch.

8. Reboot.

9. Launch Painter 8.1.

Other basic Painter tutorials written for Painter 5, Painter 6, and Painter 7, along with other Painter 7 information, downloadable custom brush variants, and Painter Developer John Derry's Visual Guides for Water Colors, Liquid Ink, and Keyboard Shortcuts (keyboard shortcuts have changed a little in Painter 8 ), all in PDF format, are available at my other site:

PixelAlley Section Links Page

On the Wacom site, there are some nice tutorials:

Painter Tips

Tips on the Wacom site include at least one written for Painter Classic but you should be able to adapt it pretty easily for use in Painter 8.

If you run into problems using older Painter version tutorials on my PixelAlley site or on the Wacom site, post a question here and maybe we can help.

There are loads more tutorials around the Painter community, so when you've gobbled up all of the above and/or feel like you've begun to get a handle on Painter 8, let us know.

You'll also find lots of info in these threads by doing a search using whatever specific terms are appropriate.

Have fun! Smile

Hi thanks for replying. Completely forgot I'd posted this here or I would have posted this sooner.

Is there any expected time frame that tutoralley forums will be open for new members again?

Thanks for the info! Why is it necessary not to open painter before installing the 8.1 patch?

No, no timeframe for when TutorAlley Forums will again be open for new registrations. As I explained above, we've had a family medical emergency and sometimes when someone's been seriously ill, we can't tell how things will turn out.

I can't give you a technically accurate reason why you shouldn't open Painter 8 even one time after installing it and before installing the Painter 8.1 patch, but....

... just don't!

Even Corel's instructions, which are less complete than they could be, say not to open Painter 8 after installing it and before installing the Painter 8.1 patch.

Follow all of the steps I gave you above to have the best chance of avoiding problems. It doesn't take any longer, really, and running into problems can be a huge headache and a huge waste of time.

It's OK, and thanks.

When I'm able to open TutorAlley Forums new registrations and begin teaching Painter classes again, I'll make announcements everywhere, so you'll know.

Thanks for your interest!
