Hey, long time no post. Been ultra busy with work, but managed to work on some personal stuff here and there. So, here it is...
This is a concept for a new character I've been developing for a series of personal werx based on Betty Page. Kinda in the cheeky vain of the old Heavy Metal stuff. Fakk, Tank Girl, etc.... Used a reference of Betty Page for the face, everything else is from the head.
Blackjack Betty:
PS7 and a 9x12 Wacom.
Used this image as referance.
Here's a detail shot.
Here's a little mixed media speedy:
Ink and watercolor on board, scanned into PS7 for some additional painting. About an hour of total work time.
And finally, A cover. I posted this a while ago on CA, so I figured I'd share it here too (text pasted from original post).
Spent the better part of a month and a half on this project.
Everything you see here, front cover illustration, title logo, back cover design, spine and front cover decorative ledge, was done by yours truly. The back cover, spine and front ledge will be used for the entire series of Arcane Codex source books, while the cover illo and title logo are just for use in the Dark Elf source book cover.
0 photo ref for the cover illustration. Had my chick do some quick hand poses for the Dark Elf priestess that I sketched form life, other than that, it's strait from the head. The cover illo was pretty heavily art directed, so color and style choices for the character's clothing wasn't my decision. The noble guy on the left is a little stiff, but all in all, I'm happy with the results.
The back cover, spine and front decorative ledge were done by painting one side and then duplicating and flipping it to keep both sides exact. After they were merged I came in a painted some little details, mostly nicks and scratches and such.
Anyways, I hope ya dig.

Great work man! The first one is screaming for a cool environment background! The second one feels too stiff, but it looked like it was fun to do considering the amount of time you put into it. The book cover is gold man! My only crit is the guy on our left looks a little to elongated and his shoulder armor on the right seems a little to big or unproportioned. Like I said before great work! _________________ It's better to have something and not need it, then to need it and not have it. |

The cover illustration is excellent. You've resisted the temptation to borrow from cultural icons, and created something unique.
bravo

Thanks for the feedback all, much appreciated.
NeFF~ Yep, I live in Arizona. The cover was done for one of my overseas clients. I believe they're in Koln Germany. Mater of fact, I don't have a single client in my state. All of my work is done for folks that are either out of state, or out of the country. Arizona, doesn't seem to have much of a need for Fantasy or Pin-Up art.
Take it easy,

I can see why you spent so much time on the cover, nicely done! I'd love to see some more drop shadow on the first one, something to explain the arm- and leg-thingy a little better.. still, cool stuff! ![Smile](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) _________________ www.mattiassnygg.com

Thanks for the c&c Mon.
Yeah, I see what you mean about the top illo. But in my own defense, I wasn't really trying to ground her in any type of setting. It is simply a piece focusing on the character concept. Perhaps a litter bg would make things easier to read?
Anywho, thanks again for the feedback.
