Hello. This is a little environment sketch I did. Its a small ink sketch that I colored in Photoshop CS with a tiny Wacom.

Any comments and crits are more than welcome but I am specifically looking for info on how to make it more theatrical and how I can improve my painting in Photoshop.

Have at it! Thanks!

121 people looked, but had nothing to say?

Somebody has to have something. I was told this was a good forum to post this in. So much for a warm welcome.

Be patient, no one has the right to be paid attention to, be thankful if someone does. Your image seems to have pretty good setup as far as the structure. I'm guessing you do more pencil drawing than painting? Just a few quick tips for digital painting:
-Don't use black
-Don't use lines
-larger brushes

That's what popped out anyway. I'd say its a great start, and you should have a lot of fun here. Just be patient, most of the critiquers on here are professionals, and barely have time to do their own work.

Hey, man, i like the style a lot... don't take anything says or does on these forums too seriously. For instance, while this last guy gave you a couple tips for improving your painting, you shouldn't actually follow verbatim. That's how you lose style. While, he does bring up some good points, make sure your paintings hold a certain flare that characterizes them as yours... oh yea, personally, i like the black outlines; it gives it a cartoony vibe (If that's what you're going for) Kudos

I've been here for over 3 years... I started 2 threads last week, waited 3 days, no reply... Bumped it back up, waited 4 more days, no reply... Now that's discouraging. Anyway about your picture... It's got some damn nice colors, very warm and inviting. Too much black though, it needs some focus. Not a bad try, though. Try working the composition a little more next time though.

Thanks everybody for your input. I appreciate it. Sorry I sounded a little whiny about not getting a response. I am just astounded at all the traffic and views this board gets and yet very few people post replys. Oh well, I guess every board has its quirks.

Also, I should clarify something. This was just a tiny little sketch I scanned in and colored. I'm really not looking to delve into full blown digital paintings at the moment. It's just time for me to find a way to quickly colorize some ideas.

Thank you and I hope everyone else feels free to keep commenting.

Incase you were interested in a second opinion, the digital paintings tips given by Anthony are, in my opinion, of little to no value. Rules like this don't help, and I can't imagine why digital painting tips should be inherently different from 'painting tips' unless they specify technique technicalities.

With no intention to leap in here, contradict Anthony's generous input and stir up some controversy, I felt it was worth mentioning that another opinion (ie. mine) allows you to do anything the hell you want with black or lines or brushes, and instead focus on practising drawing (medium irrespective) and study colour..

My view is that digital painting offers a fairly 'direct' method of creating images, with a 'colour picker' and a 'colour applicator' with no flaws or quirks, unlike natural media.

I guess a suggestion, particular to digital art, is that when you're trying to create an effect, you should always keep in mind that although there may be ways to do things 'automatically' or 'dynamically' with computer assistance, the 'best' way to achieve the effect is usually to do it 'manually'/'directly' using your head an your judgement. This helps to minimise the generally unfavourable qualities of digital art.

This comment relates to colouring, (ie. shy away from blending modes and dodge/burn etc. when you can), or to using filters or lighting effects or object effects. But even this very general tip can be ignored if you feel it runs contrary to your intentions for a picture. And it's just someone else's opinion, after all.

sorry for the ramble Smile
