.. and let me just say I like what I've seen the last 2 days on the forum. There's lots of nice artwork here, and I'm sure I'll be visiting the site a lot more often in the future.
The reason I decided to post is to show some of the work, that I've made the past 2 years at school and let you guys be the judge if I should go on and educate myself in digital drawing and painting. I've never made something with Painter or Photoshop (well at least I didn't draw anything), because it's very irritating to use a mouse, so I'm planning on buying a tablet too (A6, A5 maybe).
So in a nutshell, I've been drawing for a bit more than 2 years now and have been introduced to the fine art of etching, lino-cut, lithography etc. ... You can see some of my work here: http://users.pandora.be/banished/index.htm (I know, the website is crap; I've just started building it )
So, any comments are welcome; mostly on whether or not you think I'm ready for Painter.
Cheers and thanks in advance. _________________ Don't try surpassing others, surpass yourself ... over and over again. |

I don't believe that anyone has to be a great artist before the get into Painter or Photoshop. It is just like trying out any new media. So my answer is simple: if you want to go ahead. From the works that you have diplayed on your website, it seems that you are more familliar with drawing in monochromatic media than with painting traditionally.
Painting on the computer is not the same as drawing, but as well it is not all the same as traditional painting. However, this being said, the tools in Painter are taken from traditional painting, and this may give you problems when you when you start out. Personally, I use Photoshop, and I am quite satisified with it. It is a very flexible program that gives you so much freedom.
Lastly, to produce quality work, I would agree that a tablet of some sort is required (although some people are still great with a mouse - I don't know how).
Final word: Painter is like any new media. Try it out and see if you like it. If you enjoy it and are satisified continue with it.
Hope this helps. ![Wink](images/smiles/icon_wink.gif) _________________

Thanks for your reply. You're right, I mostly work monochrome, but that's just because these traditional techniques lend themselves more to monochromic art (I once made a lino-cut with 7! colours; never again) The thing is, I love to work with colours but when I paint traditionally, I lack the patience to really refine my colours, because I just want to start painting, so that's the main problem I always face. I usually don't get the results I'd like (colour-wise). But I think this is not such a big problem when you paint digitally as you can adjust the hue and saturation of every layer. That's why I'm more interested in digital painting
About the tablet issue; I just don't understand how some people can create beautiful things with a mouse, but I really admire this ability. Me, I need my pen, cause god knows how many times I've tried and failed miserably with a mouse
Anyway, thanks for your answer
