Pretty straightforward question...and I mean this for a project where you don't always know what the end result will be for. stamps or even a 10'x10' foot poster. I just want to play it safe for any outcome.
but anyway, I just thought I'd ask...
People that do digital paintings and illustrations for things like EXPOSE': http://www.ballisticpublishing.com/
And stuff like 5x3 foot posters 'n things. What resolution do they all set up their work at?
I mean, the dpi must be huge, and tax their cpu. It does on mine anyway. I mean, I put in 2 or more layers on a simple 8"x10" painting at 600dpi and I can't even paint cuz my cpu won't keep up with the brush movements...
Just wondering if I could get some insight from the pros.
Thanks! =)

I did my first commissions on a lousy 300MHz, with 192mb of ram. The print sizes then was 6,5x4,75 inches at 300dpi.
The cpu was on it's knees, but it helped some to make a rough sketch first with a much smaller canvas - keeping the proportions of the piece intact.
So when I had most things nailed down I blew it up into full size and could make the finishing touches.
Most of the time you don't need to work in anything more than 300dpi. Well... I don't, anyway
Good luck to ya! _________________ www.mattiassnygg.com

it all depends on the line screen the magazine or printer is going to use.. if they only use 150 then u can get away with 200dpi, but if they'' re going to use a 200 screen then can't get away with less than 260
i do all my colour stuff @ 300dpi and all line art @ 1200
posters are done @ much lower res then u think.. |

I'm kinda new at this too, I was also wondering too how to approach on how big the sheet should be when beggining. Though for huge pieces like the ones described above, I think I pretty much got that.
But what about starting big and then shrinking them, will that distor the piece any? _________________ Dont have a sig yet! So I have this text instead. |

working bigger then shrinking helps with detail, not all of the detail will be seen depending on how much the image is shrunk - ie, if u work on a piece @ 297x210mm (A4) then shrink to 74x105mm (A6), don't expect to see all the detail that you put in.. |
