well, some of you might remember me, i'm not sure.
anyway, i'm having a problem with this one.
people dont seem to realize two things. 1, that he has a dent on his head, and 2, that he is rusted.
i like to not have too much detail with my style, and i normally finish everything i do in one smooth motion (no retouching, no planning, etc.), but im not sure how else i can get my point across. anyone have some suggestions? thanks a lot |

Just a couple of things to help you out, Indentations have a shadow starting at the side closest to the light source., so that could be why the dent isn't reading as one. Second of all, rust tends to form at places exposed to the air, like dents inthe paint job, overlaps, etc. So the rust should be more at the edges of his metallic panels. IT can occur in the middle, but for rust I wouldnt' suggest using a splatter look to it as it will just make it look like he's been in a food fight. And maybe, to make it read as rust, make the rust red. If you need to, look at reference from the internet or even from old cars around your neighborhood.
Never underestimate the importance of reference and research for your work.

hmm yeah i really didnt think about the shadow being the wrong direction...
and for the rust, i did sort of use reference... i based the idea on a photograph i took recently
but now looking at the two together, yeah its not the right color, but the real rust seems to have like a pealing paint effect near the edges... like my drawing looks like its sitting on top, real rust comes from underneath... im going to have to figure out how to do that too
thanks a lot for your help, ill try and post an update later tonight |

still doesnt look right for me at a distance
i just realized these are much different in color than my working PSP file... i work in Adobe RGB 1998 and it seems saving for web changes it to sRGB? i tested by changing profiles in PS and it seems thats it... looks a lot worse... is there anyway to fix this? |

Looks better. Maybe show one area where the pealing paint effect shows more!?
The color is great now. _________________ http://www.conceptworld.org |

hmm... the dent still doesn't seem to come across QUITE as a dent -
i like this pic, and would like to see it happen - usually i'm not too big on stuff like this, but i do like this one - the rust may seem a little too realistic/complex for the pic though?
hmm... i'll try to get back to you if i think of anything. =\ _________________ ~a shadow, a moment, a memory-- a monument, a legend, a legacy~ |
